I'm happy to announce our investment in OnSight Technology! OnSight’s robotics platform helps solar operators scale without additional headcount; improves operations, maintenance and safety; and stops fires before they happen! Feedback from their customers is among the best I’ve ever heard 🤖☀️ Some of the macro tailwinds that make this timely: 🔋 Utility-Scale Solar: Large-scale projects, often spanning hundreds of acres, are becoming a cornerstone of renewable energy strategies worldwide. In the US, utility-scale solar grew by over 20% in 2023, and there is a massive backlog of new projects planned or waiting for grid connection. 🏠 Commercial/Rooftop Solar: On the smaller scale, businesses are increasingly adopting solar panels. This reduces energy bills and contributes to a greener planet. The dirty secret is that many business turn off their rooftop solar because of the threat of fire and business interruption. OnSight’s OWL fixes this. ⚠️ Growth in Thermal Events: With the rapid expansion of solar farms, there has also been an uptick in "thermal events," or fires. These incidents destroy infrastructure and threaten nearby communities. 👷♂️ Labor Challenges: Like so many other industries, the solar industry is facing labor challenges. The availability and quality of skilled workers is crucial to maintaining and expanding solar infrastructure. Additionally, workers often have to operate in extremely hot environments, which can impact productivity and safety (hi, OSHA). Bifacial photovoltaic (BPV) systems offer several advantages over traditional monofacial systems: 1. **Higher Energy Yield**: BPVs can capture sunlight from both sides, increasing energy output by up to 30% compared to monofacial panels. This is especially beneficial in environments with high albedo (reflective surfaces), such as snow-covered areas or white rooftops. 2. **Better Land Use**: By generating more electricity per square meter, BPVs make better use of available space, which is particularly useful in areas with limited space for solar installations. 3. **Cost Efficiency**: Although BPVs can be more expensive upfront, their higher energy yield can lead to a lower levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) over time, making them more cost-effective in the long run. 4. **Durability and Longevity**: BPV panels often have better cooling properties due to their double-sided nature, which can reduce thermal stress and potentially extend their operational lifespan. 5. **Versatility in Installation**: BPVs can be used in various installations, such as ground-mounted systems, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), and even floating solar farms, offering flexibility in deployment. 6. **Environmental Benefits**: Integrating BPVs with green roofs or other sustainable practices can enhance environmental benefits, such as reducing urban heat islands and promoting biodiversity. These advantages make BPVs a promising technology for maximizing solar energy generation and improving the sustainability of solar installations.

Read a brilliant article by Harry Haines. Explaining the urgency to combat climate change and how UK businesses face increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprints. To meet the government’s target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, companies must adopt innovative strategies that offer both environmental and economic benefits. One effective solution is the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). What is a PPA? A PPA is a long-term contract where a business buys renewable energy directly from a producer, typically for 15 to 25 years. PPAs provide long-term price stability, protect against energy market fluctuations, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Benefits of PPAs Cost Stability: Long-term price certainty. Emission Reductions: Substantial cuts in greenhouse gases. Financial Security for Developers: Encourages investment in renewable projects. Case Studies Large Telecom Company: 100 MW solar PPA, reducing carbon emissions by 81%. Large Pharma Company: 23 MW wind PPA, cutting emissions by 60%. The declining value of renewable generation received much attention last year as it is the main reason for canceled projects. It is often quantified as a reduction of the capture rate, which measures the volume-weighted average price production receives (capture price) compared to the average electricity price for a given month. However, plant revenue is not determined by the relative capture rate but by the absolute capture price, which is the payment it receives from the market. The problem is not that solar plants are not earning money. While the capture rate is lower than ever, the capture price is not that low compared to historical levels. The capture price reached a minimum of 39.5 €/MWh in DK2 in May 2024, while the same month in 2020 (before the energy crisis) had a price of 18.8 €/MWh. In the same period, utility-scale solar has experienced a huge reduction in CAPEX, which has resulted in a lower levelized cost of energy generation. However, a large share of the capacity was built in previous years with higher CAPEX, servicing a larger debt, but also financed in a market with lower prices. Therefore, the realized solar revenues are not at a level that would cause the existing solar parks to default unless they have baseload PPAs, which will be discussed in the next post.
