𝐇𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐧𝐨 As data professionals, we have a rare vantage point across systems. With an increasing number of tools purchased and systems integrated, this unique position is of great value. But all too often, we’re asked to patch problems instead of helping the business to build sustainable solutions. At this month’s edition of the Data Science Meetup Hamburg, I will be talking about embracing the responsibility to support the business in making the right strategic decisions. Sometimes, this entails saying no. Join us for insights, discussions, and a chance to connect. Registration link in the comments. Be quick, there is only a limited number of spots available. Big thanks to Marc P. for organizing and to Peer Ziegler and Statista for hosting us at a great venue!

I’m back in Copenhagen from having attended Data Day Texas 2025 in Austin. Lynn Bender, Alex Law and the Lone Star State delivered an All Star cast of speakers and participants. I’ll do a detailed write-up of my notes on Substack later in the week, but for now here are my personal highlights of the conference: The Keynote and subsequent AMA/Roundtable by Ole Olesen-Bagneux gave an introduction and later deep-drive of the Meta Grid, from his coming O'Reilly book. Like most great ideas, it’s a simple but powerful concept. It’ll be interesting to see how it will be picked up by both the community and industry. Malcolm Hawker made a call to arms as well as quite a few convincing argument for the use of product and growth mindsets in the data community. It connected a lot of dots for me. Can’t wait to read his Data Hero Playbook. The case for a product mindset in Data and AI as well as reflections of the necessary approaches and skill sets seemed to emerge as a more general theme (in the sessions I attended). Different aspects of this theme (and much more) were further explored in the presentations of Eevamaija Virtanen, Annie Nelson, Yoann Benoit, Anne-Claire BASCHET and Jordan Morrow. 🎯 Mark Freeman II introduced data contracts as an indispensable tool in any shift-left data toolbox with a focus on quality and governance. That’s another O'Reilly book I’m anticipating. Last but not least Jessica Talisman pulled of the impressive feat of making a number of quite complex subjects easily understandable and relateable, when she introduced a number of library sciences' foundational concepts and how they can be applied to the Data/AI space. Second day was a flurry of roundtables around several interesting subjects (as well as no small amounts of relevant digressions). Thanks! Jean-Georges Perrin, Juan Sequeda, Joe Reis, Super Data Brothers & Bethany Lyons. I was so impressed by the level of skills, intellectual rigor as well as openness of the data community. If surrounding yourself with people smarter than you is a positive metric, I believe I did very well at the conference. And now back to work…

One of the themes of July 2024 has been #data! Attending the launch of the Data Inclusivity Network highlighted the importance of diversity of thought in terms of who we attract and progress in data roles, how data is captured, interpreted and communicated; and the impact of data on our lives (whether we recognise it or not!). Thanks Cardiff Capital Region Tramshed Tech Richard Lewis Hodge Laura Alexander David Landen and all panel members Matt Davies and speakers Aimee Bateman for an inspiring event - here's to many more interesting conversations! Our Director Rosie Sweetman PEC partnered with Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Liz Merrifield to design and facilitate Hackathons to gather insights and shape ideas from across the research data community as to how we continue to evolve data governance and adapt to changing funder and stakeholder requirements. We explored cultural and technical opportunities and shaped a suite of ideas to feature in a data governance roadmap. Thanks to Jon Lockley, The 'Matts' Dr Matthew Mort and Matthew Hayden and Emma Lagerstedt for fuelling our thinking. Look forward to seeing how the ideas progress! And Our Director Chris Sweetman wrapped up a series of Action Learning Sets on behalf of Action Learning Associates Ltd Sonja Antell for the Data Justice Lab Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd Arne Hintz. Set members have been exploring the opportunities and challenges in improving public engagement in the design and rollout of AI and data analytics systems in public life. All these events revealed the real opportunity data, and those who work in and with data, have for influencing our decisions, choices and way of life. Of course, with this influence comes responsibility and it's reassuring to see and hear a real commitment from across the community for thinking about, and bringing to life, the role and responsibility of data and data professionals Here's to harnessing the positive power of #data!

This work is so important …. The policies, ethics, public thoughts and perceptions on this topic are all complex areas that need unpicking. But we must understand the barriers to building trust in this whole area if we are deliver the very real social and economic benefits of sharing public and private data…..
🗣 We're delighted to announce that tomorrow, Saturday, 7 September, sees the first of a series of public dialogue workshops from Smart Data Research UK and our partners Sciencewise. Sessions are taking place across the UK - in Belfast, Gateshead, Inverness, London and Newport. It's the start of a national conversation about smart data research. Recently, I had the chance to attend the ADV Data Excellence Conference 2024 in Austria with some colleagues. Now that I'm back in Kyiv 🇺🇦, I wanted to share the key takeaways and standout moments from the conference: 💼 It was really interesting to see how Europe envisions the future of working with data and how data projects are progressing in government bodies, big companies, and beyond. Right now, issues like security, data management, and data quality are front and center. 🤖 One of the most intriguing talks was on the "AI Excellence Framework." I particularly enjoyed "KI & DATENSTRATEGIE DER WIENER LINIEN", which discussed implementing AI in Vienna's public transport. The speakers, @Dominik Michel (Account Executive, Cloudera) and @Bernhard Ortner (Lead Data Architect, WIENER LINIEN), did a great job. It was cool to meet folks from Cloudera and dive deep into the ins and outs of such a massive project using Vienna as a case study. 🌐 There was one presentation delivered in English that stood out - "Towards a Data-Driven Public Sector" by @João Ricardo Vasconcelos (Senior Governance Specialist GovTech - Governance Global Practice, World Bank). It shed light on projects in the public sector funded by the World Bank. Big thanks for that insightful session. 🙌 A huge shoutout to the organizers, speakers, and everyone else involved for making the event truly unforgettable. #DataExcellenceConference #Innovation #DataGovernance #AIEthics #ADV #ADVKonferenz #ADVDataExcellence #ADVDataExcellenceKonferenz #DataX
