𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀? 💡 Overall, critical infrastructure is the backbone of our society, encompassing vital sectors like transportation, energy, water supply, healthcare, and communication. Each plays a crucial role in our daily lives, and recognising their importance helps us appreciate the interconnectedness of these systems. As a subcontractor providing software to companies in these sectors, we naturally comply with the NIS2 framework and the required security standards. The companies that deploy and operate critical infrastructure have a critical and important responsibility to our society. Through the President’s Investing in America Agenda, the Biden-Harris Administration has announced $448 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding – including over 51,000 infrastructure projects – and spurred $825 billion in private sector investment in industries including clean power, biomanufacturing, and clean energy manufacturing. Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law alone, the President has delivered $50 billion for infrastructure resilience specifically, including $8.7 billion from the PROTECT program to improve the resilience of transportation infrastructure and $4.5 billion through FEMA to fortify a range of infrastructure against hazards. Through this $50 billion in resilience funding, the Administration has launched over 4,000 infrastructure resilience projects nationwide.

When is a TIA required? A Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) is required for developments that are expected to generate a substantial increase in traffic volume, potentially affecting the surrounding road network. The TIA evaluates whether the development will require modifications to existing or planned transportation infrastructure, including public transit services

The number of subsea cables landing in Australia has more than doubled since the legislation to create protection zones for these vital pieces of infrastructure was passed in 2005. Excellent insights from J. Sharpe Smith on the Wireless Infrastructure Association's push for a nationwide broadband permitting framework. This article highlights Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Brendan Carr's desire to streamline regulations to accelerate infrastructure deployment. The proposed American Broadband Deployment Act (ABDA) introduces reforms like predictable timelines and "deemed granted" relief, which can help overcome existing roadblocks. This blog post highlights the great work the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is doing around permitting at the federal level to support #internetforall Critical permitting progress is being made at the federal level. As states and local governments get set to receive BEAD funding in the coming year(s) there will be opportunities for local governments to lead the way with #permitting modernization, innovation and reform.

To close the quality infrastructure gap abroad, we needed a better understanding of the role of #foreignassistance across the infrastructure lifecycle. Elizabeth Losos and I co-led a dream team of #thoughtleaders from across the USG, including Amy Kirschenbaum Swers, Dr. Jake Grover, Sital Uprety + Eilish Zembilci from Duke for the infrastructure assistance review (#IAR). I am thrilled to share our final product -- A Roadmap for Foreign Assistance to Support Quality Infrastructure. I hope that the findings and recommendations in this document will support a long-term vision of infrastructure spending that directly supports our national security and foreign policy objectives. A couple of highlights include: 🏭 A new stand-alone project lifecycle framework for USG inter-agency infrastructure planning 🏗️ Guidance for communicating the local benefits of quality infrastructure in the context of strategic competition 🌿 A framework on inter-agency roles and an inventory of cross government opportunities to scale The IAR reminded me of the power and potential of quality infrastructure to improve lives around the world.
