Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has become the standard approach to reduce post operative morbidity, potentially shorten duration of surgery, reduce incision size and in some cases, improve surgical exposure and access. There is however, a steep learning curve associated with the acquisition of skills required for MIS. Many studies display significant heterogeneity in the reliability of artificial intelligence (AI) assessment of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) skills. SXR’s Professor Michael Wilson supported by Professor Veronica Preda and Terry Carney, investigated whether AI systems utilising standardised objective metrics (SOMs) as the basis of skill assessment can provide a clearer understanding of the current state of such technology. Although it has been 6 years since I have seen and assisted lap chole's during residency it was still great fun to try this out! Fun fact: For now, a computer scientist is leading the scoring board above expert surgeons, just to tell you how realistic it is!
