TL;DR Despite bureaucratic and financial challenges, collaboration efforts are beginning to pay off, bridging the gap between startups and military needs. The future looks bright as these agile, tech-savvy companies push forward, promising a stronger, smarter defense system, one we can seek to emulate. We don't have to re-learn these lessons when a near peer fight becomes unavoidable. Let's provide an avenue for lessons learned by our allies in Ukraine and Israel to be analyzed and adopted, as appropriate, in the US joint force.

The Pentagon cannot roll back technology or out-build an opponent like China, so US forces will need to gain an edge through operational creativity and leveraging the software and commercial industries that make America’s economy the world’s largest and most vibrant. The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (CDAO) leads the DoD's pursuit of a software-defined force that can evolve to stay ahead of rivals. Yesterday, I sat down with CDAO Dr. Radha Plumb, Deputy CDAO Margaret Palmieri, and defense industry representatives on how CDAO can help give US forces a needed advantage against 21st century opponents. A leading British defence start-up is scrambling to cut ties with a Chinese investor that was last week blacklisted by the Pentagon. Hadean, which makes artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation tools used by the Ministry of Defence and Nato, is urgently seeking new investors to replace Tencent. The Chinese technology giant was last week placed on a Pentagon blacklist by US defence officials, which labels Tencent a “military” company. The US said the designation was aimed at “highlighting and countering the People’s Republic of China’s military-civil fusion strategy”.

“How Ukraine Rebuilt Its Military with Innovation and Speed 🚀” ✨ The Big Picture: The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) report “How Ukraine Rebuilt Its Military Acquisition System Around Commercial Technology” reveals how Ukraine transformed its defense capabilities by leveraging private-sector innovation, streamlining processes, and focusing on battlefield demands (written by Kateryna Bondar). 🔥 Why It Matters: Facing existential threats, Ukraine’s defense strategy shifted radically, cutting timelines from years to weeks. Here’s how they did it: • Private-Public Synergy: Harnessing commercial and dual-use technologies for rapid battlefield deployment. • BRAVE1 Platform (runs by Nataliia Kushnerska) : A government-supported ecosystem uniting startups, private capital, and defense industries for collaborative innovation. • Streamlined Processes: Adoption and deployment timelines reduced drastically, getting systems into soldiers’ hands faster. 🔑 Key Insights: 1️⃣ Shortened Acquisition Cycles: • Requirements, prototyping, and adoption into service now take weeks, not years. This agility has proven critical for real-time battlefield relevance. 2️⃣ Empowered Ecosystem: • Platforms like Brave1 have fostered unprecedented collaboration between engineers, startups, and the military, driving rapid innovation and iteration. 3️⃣ Off-the-Shelf Deployment: • By focusing on mature technologies, Ukraine bypassed lengthy R&D cycles, deploying cost-effective solutions directly to the frontlines. 🌐 What’s Next? Ukraine’s transformation offers a blueprint for modernizing defense innovation globally. Speed, collaboration, and adaptability aren’t just goals—they’re imperatives. 🔗 Dive Deeper: Check out the full report (attached) and Brave1 platform (google it). 💬 What’s your take? Friday after noon musings, we need to start a grassroots movement in support of NATO warfighters. Innovation has been taken over by discussion and focus, especially financially, on "Deep-Tech." While I do not dispute that complex and developing technologies like Quantum, AI etc will be important and definitely need research dollars to day to bring them to useable fruition in future years, we have completely handicapped dollars going to simple tools that can greatly aid our warfighters today! For example, "Yes! I need to figure out how humans can live on Mars BUT can I just have a few dollars to automate this time crippling data-entry process today?" Someday soon AI will process mounds and mounds of data and aid in human decision making BUT a warfighter would tell you, "Right now I have a dozen people banging away on keyboards for three weeks entering a FRoB for this upcoming exercise. These people are really skilled in their areas of expertise, and I need them employing it NOT doing data entry!" Right now, NATO warfighters cannot free "nickels to kill today's elephants!" So how about a new term, a hybrid approach, a "dual use" approach, if you will? Let's call it "Shallow Tech" the less cool but VERY impactful cousin of "Deep Tech" and MUCH cheaper! Innovation IMO helps Today AND works towards Tomorrow, but we need to Win TODAY to get to Tomorrow!!! Thoughts?
