SDR roles are declining. And AE roles are rising. Sales teams are shifting: - AEs are becoming primary sellers - SDR positions are getting leaner - Automation of SDR tasks is on the rise In Q1 2022, the Role Growth Index for SDRs peaked at around 108. By Q4 2023, it fell below 90. This suggests a significant reduction in reliance on SDRs. In Q3 2023, there were about 35,000 SDR roles at companies with fewer than 1,000 employees. By Q3 2024, this number dropped to approximately 32,000 – a 6% reduction. Meanwhile, the Role Growth Index for AEs has remained stable, around 102 between Q1 2022 and Q3 2023. By Q3 2024, it shows a slight upward trend, indicating a growing reliance on AEs. Companies are increasingly relying on AEs for both lead qualification and direct selling. This shift may be driven by the rise of automation tools and AI, which handle many repetitive tasks traditionally done by SDRs. As a result, AEs are now operating more frequently in a full-cycle capacity. Feedback from GTM leaders supports this shift: “We’ve realigned our business model in 2024 to make our AEs full cycle. For a startup, full cycle is the only way to go. Signing big companies like Intuit means upselling and expanding those accounts are more valuable than most of our regular customers.” – James Kaikis, Head of GTM at TestBox.
