Today we publish a new report - “That’s Not Your Role” - into State funding and advocacy in Ireland. The report finds a worrying level of self-censorship by community & voluntary organisations receiving State funding due to fear of impact on funding. Click the link below to read the report. Some key findings: - 37% of participants have curtailed their advocacy and campaigning - 48% of homelessness and addiction organisations have done so - Almost 30% of organisations have explicit clauses in funding contracts limiting their ability to comment on gov policy https://lnkd.in/eYfgY3Td

A really important and timely report from Irish Council for Civil Liberties on self censorship among community and voluntary organisations in receipt of state funding. 37% said they had curtailed their advocacy, comms and campaigning due to a fear of it impacting their funding. It contains this key recommendation: "All funding agreements between the State and NGOs should be modified to clearly state that the acceptance of funding does not preclude criticism of government policy, campaigning or advocacy. A complaints mechanism for breach of these agreements should be considered." Report available here: https://lnkd.in/eU53ygcU

New article with Aaron Brusseel and Peter Raeymaeckers in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. We find, based on a vignette experiment, that local policy makers are open for input by advocacy organisations when designing poverty alleviation policies. Especially when these advocacy organisations apply direct and professional tactics. This nuances as least partly the primacy of politics assumption (according to which politicians are increasingly averse to societal input in the policy making process). Today, 1000 Days Fund continue our advocacy success in Manggarai Barat as we continue to ensure the rights of Community Health Workers (CHWs) are protected through regulations. Alongside government officials from several different offices, and other NGOs who support similar goals, we draft the CHWs regulation that had been non-existent before. We bring valuable points and enriched the discussion by combining the advocacy principles from the Community Health Impact Coalition (CHIC) with our field team's keen field observations and put together a draft with the government of Manggarai Barat. The draft is aimed at protecting CHWs rights to receive support in order to achieve 5S: Skilled, Supplied, Salaried (Incentivized), Supervised, and Sustained in their work. This first drafting session will be followed by a few more sessions in the coming months before it is finalized. We'll keep up the fights for those at the frontline. ---- Dr. Madeleine Ballard Lennie B. Zack Petersen Rindang Asmara-Petersen Sisi Arawinda Adriana Viola Miranda Karina Suryawinata Aisyah Nurrusma

In recent years, many countries have witnessed a decline of democracy and fundamental freedoms. In such environments, civil society organizations (CSOs) must explore new strategies to continue advocating for positive social change and to push back against these restrictions. ❓ What must be done differently in restricted spaces to ensure effective advocacy? Alliance2015 partner Helvetas Regional Advocacy Network (RAN) discussed this question with local partner CSOs from #Bosnia and Herzegovina and #Serbia. Lets find out what CSOs can do to improve their situation in restricted spaces and continue to push for positive social changes! 💪 👇 https://bit.ly/4eH6Swj
