This week’s question: “I’m a senior designer at an independent studio in London and I started the role just off the back of Covid. It’s been an ongoing conversation with the founder about a pay review or pay raise; the first time we had a chat about it was when I had just passed my probation and one year review. Their response was, “we’re a new studio and we need to prioritise studio hiring and culture building”. They would even sometimes say they’re not even paying themselves as founders – which is obviously not true. How should I approach this conversation moving forward? With the current state of the industry and economic landscape, it feels like the studio has the upper-hand of the ‘pay’ situation. I find it quite hard to navigate, and I’ve even considering quitting, but I also worry that it’s not the best time to do so. I remember the first time I asked for a pay rise. I was nervous, unsure, and hesitant. But I had just led a successful project that brought substantial value to the company. I knew I had to step up and ask. So, I scheduled a meeting with my manager. I prepared a list of my achievements and contributions. When the day came, I walked into the office with a mix of anxiety and determination. I laid out my case, highlighting the impact of my work. My manager listened intently. Then came the response: “We value your work, but we can't offer a pay rise right now.” I felt a wave of disappointment. But my manager didn’t stop there. He offered constructive feedback on what I could improve. He acknowledged my efforts and assured me of my value to the team. He also discussed future opportunities and set a timeline for revisiting the conversation. That conversation changed my perspective. I realised it wasn't just about the money. It was about feeling valued and recognised. It motivated me to work harder, improve, and eventually, I did get that pay rise. Employers, when you have to refuse a pay rise, remember to: → Be transparent → Offer constructive feedback → Highlight their value → Discuss future opportunities These steps can make a huge difference. They can turn a potentially negative experience into a motivating one. To anyone hesitant to ask for a pay rise, remember this: It's okay to ask. It's okay to advocate for yourself. So, I am sharing some of my points for this 👇 1. Know Your Value-: If you’re going to get the pay you deserve, it’s crucial to know the going rate for your position in your specific industry and in your geographic area. 2. Make Sure You’re Ready-: Before you ask for a raise, you’ll want to ask yourself a few questions. Have you been at your job for a year? Have you taken on new responsibilities since you’ve been hired? Have you been exceeding expectations (rather than just meeting them)? The answer to all of these should be “yes.” 3- Plan the Right Timing_: Turns out, timing is everything. Most people wait until performance review season to ask for a salary adjustment, but by that time, your boss has probably already decided what raises will be doled out to the team. 4- Remember Practice Makes Perfect-: Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Write down what you want to say, and practice to a mirror, on video, or with a friend until you’re super comfortable having the conversation 5-Walk in With Confidence-: “The way you enter a room can dictate how the rest of an interaction will be,” says James Clear. “Ever see someone slump through a doorway with a scowl on their face? Not very inspiring. Keep your head high and smile when you enter. Starting things off with a positive vibe is very important, no matter how small it is.”

🎃 No tricks, just tips - don't be spooked asking for a pay rise! 👻 Asking for a pay rise might not be the easiest conversation, but with the right approach, it can be constructive and positive. 🔹️ Do your research. Make sure you know the market rate for your role and industry - you can do this by comparing your role to those being advertised, be thorough, salaries vary due to company size and location - keep this in mind. 🔹️ Next, highlight your value. Be specific about the impact you’ve had—whether it’s hitting targets, improving processes or supporting the team. The more examples, the better. 🔹️ Timing is crucial. You want to approach this conversation when your achievements are fresh, and the business is in a good position to respond. Think about your company’s performance and even your manager’s schedule. 🔹️ When you do ask, keep it professional and respectful. Be clear about what you’re asking for, but also be open to dialogue. Negotiation is part of the process. 🔹️ Lastly, be prepared for feedback. You might not get an immediate answer, and that’s okay. Use this opportunity to get constructive feedback and talk about how you can work toward that raise if it’s not the right time now. We believe in advocating for your worth while keeping it professional and positive. Let’s get real for a second-delayed salaries might feel like just another part of the corporate grind, but for the people on your team, it’s a heavy hit. Salary isn’t some “bonus prize”, it’s not a favor—it’s the promise you make to your employees for showing up, giving their time, and putting in their best effort every day. The promise. The unspoken agreement that says, “You work, we pay.” Think about it. When salaries are delayed by 30 or 35 days, are you running a business or starring in a reality show called “How Long Can They Wait?” How does that even work for someone living paycheck to paycheck? Are they supposed to call their landlord and say, “Hey, can we postpone rent because my paycheck is running late?” Can they ask their utility company for an extension on the light bill? Groceries, school fees, medical bills—life doesn’t wait. Why should they? 𝐏𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐤. It’s about respect. It’s about trust. It’s about showing your team that you see them and value them as real people with real responsibilities, not just cogs in a machine. Here’s a thought: pay salaries on time for the next two months.
