Poverty reduction in India is faltering. We present new state-level estimates of poverty based on imputation models using the Periodic Labour Force Survey data. According to the results of the assessment of the Statistics Agency under the President of Uzbekistan, by the end of 2023, the poverty level in Uzbekistan has decreased to 11.0%. The Center for Economic Research and Reforms conducted an analysis of changes in the level of well-being of the population of Uzbekistan in 2022-2023 based on data from a household budget survey throughout the republic. It should be noted that the change in the poverty level in Uzbekistan has been revised based on the best international practices. Thus, the international calculation method used is based on the concept of the World Bank. In particular, household budgets throughout the republic are being studied throughout the year. Happy to share our latest piece "Assumptions Matter: Revisiting India's Multidimensional Poverty Index" published in The India Forum. In this article, we argue and illustrate that poverty numbers cannot be taken at face value, but must be understood in the context of the methodology used to construct the poverty measure. In the Indian context, using the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) constructed for India (by tweaking the UNDP poverty measure), the NITI Aayog estimates 13.5 crore Indians to have escaped poverty between 2015 and 2021. We show that how even small tweaks in the measurement of the MPI changes this number drastically. The lack of updated data on poverty in India was discussed in great detail during a recent panel discussion organised by the Foundation for Agrarian Studies. The discussion centred on a research article titled, “Poverty in India: The Rangarajan Method and the 2022–23 Household Consumption and Expenditure Survey,” published in the Review of Agrarian Studies (14,2), which argues that more than a quarter of India’s population continues to live in poverty.
