Highberg x SECO-institute Webinar: Ethics and Technology: How to Navigate Value Tensions This webinar features Highberg's Managing Director Erik van Zegveld. Erik anticipates that all developments regarding AI and the use of data in the coming years will lead to more ethical questions and societal discussions. In addition to the question of whether something is possible and allowed, we increasingly ask ourselves whether we should want it. For example, consider the use of data or AI in decisions regarding whether or not you are entitled to a government childcare benefit or regarding the use of cameras in the public domain. Do the advantages of AI and data weigh against the disadvantages? And how do you weigh this? In this webinar, we will answer these questions. 📅 The webinar will take place on 13-06-24 at 14.00. 🔗 Ready to participate? It's Sunday again and another episode of ETHICS TV is here. This week Jonathan MacDonald welcomes Deborah Webster, an expert in ethical practices and author of the book "Better Than Your Behaviour." The discussion explores how businesses can and are meant to operate as a force for good, integrating human principles into technological advancements, and how rethinking corporate practices can lead to both ethical and innovative solutions. Watch this episode to understand this important perspective on the value of genuine ethical behavior over surface-level compliance, and the potential for AI to enhance human purpose. Together they discuss: Human-Centered Ethics in Business and Technology: Deborah Webster discusses the necessity of integrating character and principled behavior into corporate and technological practices to create businesses that act as forces for good. Rethinking Corporate Practices for Ethical Solutions: Highlighting a case study from her work in Sub-Saharan Africa, Deborah shares how understanding local cultural contexts and needs led to innovative and successful solutions that benefited both the community and the business. Role of AI in Enhancing Human Purpose: Exploring the potential future where AI, if it gains consciousness, could possibly be kinder and more ethical than humans, and how current training of AI on human behaviors necessitates a focus on instilling humanistic values into these algorithms. This is an important topic to be applied in all businesses and technological innovations. What examples have you seen of these principles being applied? https://lnkd.in/e8QfeKge #aiethics #ethicstv #globalethics #humanity #technology #bigtech

I am really proud to share with you all that my chapter with the title "Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights: Catalyst or Conundrum?" has been published in "AI Governance Ethics: Artificial Intelligence with Shared Values and Rules", a book published this year with a variety of unique and diverse perspectives on AI governance from authors around the world. The book has been published by Globethics, which is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The book confronts various opportunities, challenges and developments that warrant consideration at an international level, at regional level and at national levels in relation to AI governance and regulation, with ethics as the golden thread. My chapter in particular looks at the onset of AI in light of its impact on human rights, AI in context as the "human" in a digital world, the opportunities and challenges that AI poses to human rights and human rights as a lens when looking at AI. I sought to demonstrate this practically by looking at two human rights in particular: the right to human dignity and the right to freedom of expression. In writing this contribution, I was astonished at the amount of literature that seeks to grapple with AI and human rights. This is still a vast and hugely debatable area in the quest to enhance AI governance and regulation worldwide and at regional as well as national levels. Although I touch on how this intersection looks in practice as part of my chapter, there is still so much to be said on it and, with the speed at which AI is developing today, the intersection between AI and human rights is becoming even more complex to navigate. This is an area that I am particularly passionate about and I am preparing to write more in the human rights arena about AI and where the balance needs to be struck between the two (a difficult task but I embrace it). As the old saying goes, "watch this space". You can download the book for free via this link: https://lnkd.in/dxJcpepU I extend my gratitude to Globethics and the editors' panel of this book, including Divya Singh, for giving me the opportunity to contribute to what I believe is a seminal work on AI governance, regulation and the importance of ethics as a benchmark for quality and just global, regional and national AI governance. I also wish to thank extensively my dear friend and colleague, Willy Engelbrecht (PhD), for his support and encouragement given to me while I wrote this contribution from start to finish. Thoughts, comments and questions regarding my chapter are heartily welcome 😊 #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Humanrights #AIgovernance #Ethics #AIphilosophy #Philosophy
