The shifting winds of the U.S. economy in the past year have left designers disoriented. Officially, the labor market is still on fire, with job growth data from the Department of Labor continuing to surprise economists, adding more than 600,000 jobs in the first two months of 2024. But if you work in tech, the picture looks decidedly different. The tech industry—the terrain of many designers—lost more than 50,000 worldwide jobs between January and March of 2024, according to tracker site layoffs.fyi, as it continues to downsize following more than a decade of unfettered headcount growth and the rising specter of AI. https://lnkd.in/eVFdux4v

I’ve hired over a 100 designers over the last 5 years. Here are 5 things I learned as an interviewer and also what a job seeker can do to increase their odds of getting hired: As a hiring manager and interviewer, I have learned: - Hiring is costly and risky. Don't rush it. - Seek a balance of skills and potential in designers. - Be transparent about your offer and the team. - Respect candidates, even if you can't hire them. - Learn from mistakes to improve your hiring process. If you are a designer looking for job: - A strong portfolio is critical for design jobs. Obsess over building a good one. - Agencies and product companies have different hiring processes and needs. Know what you’re looking for. - Prepare well for interviews. Expect high competition. It is not uncommon for companies to receive 1000s of applications for 1 or 2 positions. - Be professional and respectful. Even when facing rejection. As a designer, you will be rejected too often in the beginning. Get comfortable with it. - Don’t burn the bridges. If you weren’t hired today, it doesn't mean you will never be. Bonus tip: Put your design skills at use. Do a competitive study and develop an advantage. It could be the portfolio or skill/experience or networking or packaging of your application. “What would make the company hire you, over 1000s of other applicants?”

The design industry is dynamic, and so are the relationships within it. While some designers and recruiters have established successful partnerships, there's always room for improvement. Let's discuss: Overcoming the Stigma: Many designers view recruiters as pushy or only interested in filling positions. How can we change this perception? Building Trust: What steps can you take to build trust with a recruiter? Maximizing Your Time: How can you efficiently evaluate recruiter opportunities? Defining Your Career Goals: Clearly communicating your career aspirations to recruiters can improve your chances of finding the right fit. By understanding the challenges and opportunities, designers can build stronger relationships with recruiters and ultimately advance their careers. Share your experiences and insights to help other designers navigate the recruiting landscape. #3pcareers #architecture #interiordesign #civilengineering #landdevelopment #landscapearchitecture #designprofessionals #designcareers #designjobs #careers #hr #opportunities #REVIT #adobe

The ID job market is tough right now. It's easy for job seekers to take this as a reflection of their own ability and feel devastated when they get yet another rejection. Things like improving your work and application materials, networking, and taking breaks from the process when you need to. Now who's hiring in ID this week? ThreeSixty Group Ltd. This is so true! As an international student and recent industrial design graduate in New York City, I face the daily stress of finding a job to secure my visa and stay in the country. With a limited timeframe, the pressure is immense, and the uncertainty of the future can be overwhelming. Every day, I wonder if I’ll be able to stay or if I will have to move out in the next few months. As an early-career designer, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with more experienced designers who have been laid off and are now seeking the same opportunities. It’s a slow journey, but I remain hopeful. Despite the challenges, I am focusing on what I can control—improving my work, refining my application materials, and building a strong network. I believe that perseverance and determination will eventually lead to success. To all my fellow job seekers out there, especially those who are also international students, keep striving and stay positive. We will navigate these tough times together. #IndustrialDesign #JobMarket #InternationalStudent #CareerJourney #StayHopeful #KeepTrying

Do recruiters really have a Do Not Hire list? Sounds subjective. Is this legal? No wonder there are senior designers who haven't been hired. The design industry is subjective. #recruiters #design #hiringprocess #seniordesigners #jobseekers

It shouldn't take any longer than 30 days to hire a designer. (IC, not leadership) If it does, the likelihood is: - Your TA/Recruitment team is a blocker. - Salaries are not aligned to the market. - You are not selling the role enough. - HR blackholes i.e. offer processes. - Your interview process is too long. - You don't know what you want. The problem is so many senior designers are burning out, leaving the industry or starting new ventures. We're suffering from inflated titles, salaries and egos caused by when money was easier to access in 2021, and companies had to overpay just to get average design talent. So what we're left with in some cases is junior/mid talent going for senior roles, but companies holding out for actual senior designers. Interesting times. It's easy to hire designers, but the top designers for your exact needs is harder. You should always be scouting the market for what the top tier means to you.
