Valerie Graves is a highly esteemed creative director renowned for her work with prestigious conglomerates across the nation. With a track record of managing Fortune 500 accounts including Ford, General Motors, AT&T, Burger King, General Foods, and Pepsi, Graves has left an indelible mark on the advertising industry. Notably, she served as the Senior Vice President of Creative Services at the iconic Motown Records from 1983 to 1985 before transitioning to become President Bill Clinton’s creative consultant during his 1992 campaign.
A trailblazer in the advertising sector, Graves shattered stereotypes as one of the earliest black women to ascend to executive roles within major advertising agencies. Her journey began in Detroit in the mid to late 1970s, where she embarked on her career as one of only two women working in advertising on a Pontiac account. Graves's groundbreaking achievements include being among the first black copywriters at BBDO, Kenyon & Eckhardt, and JWT, where she opened doors for women of color in the industry.
In 2006, Graves founded Vigilante, a creative consultancy agency dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion within advertising. She later served as Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer at UniWorld Group Inc. Additionally, Graves shared her experiences and wisdom in her memoir, "Pressure Makes Diamonds: Becoming the Woman I Pretended to Be."
