🚀 The J-Curve of the AI Revolution: Challenges and Opportunities for Businesses 🧠 Erik Brynjolfsson from Stanford University highlights in a recent Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung article the “Productivity J-Curve” of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Despite its massive potential, the introduction of AI doesn't come without hurdles. Companies often experience an initial decline in productivity before the technology takes full effect – this is known as the J-Curve. +++ What can we learn from this? 1️⃣ AI is no magic bullet. As Brynjolfsson emphasizes, simply implementing AI tools is not enough to drive productivity leaps. It requires deep process adjustments and employee training to fully realize its benefits. 2️⃣ Augmentation, not replacement. A key point is the “Turing Trap” concept: companies should not use AI to replace humans but rather to augment their capabilities. This synergy leads not only to greater value creation but also to more equitable value distribution. 3️⃣ Learning from case studies. In a call center, AI implementation resulted in a “triple win”: increased productivity, improved customer satisfaction, and enhanced employee engagement. Notably, less skilled employees benefited the most from AI support, enabling them to learn faster from the best practices within the company. 💡 Leadership takeaways: ✅ Understand the J-Curve and prepare your organization for initial adaptation costs. ✅ Focus on upskilling your teams to use AI as a booster for human capabilities. Think holistically – AI is more than just a tech upgrade; it requires rethinking business models and processes. ✅ The next few years could be the “best decade in human history” – if we get it right. How GenAI is influencing industrial services According to a survey, there is still some catching up to do when it comes to implementing and using generative AI in an industrial environment: a quarter of companies have started to implement customer-specific, high-priority use cases. Around 60 percent of companies are only in the initial phase of implementation, while 25 percent are not yet using Gen AI at all. Half of them lack competent developers and the corresponding expertise. The potential risks of using GenAI are another stumbling block. These tend to be classified as high, particularly in terms of data security and the protection of intellectual property. More than 70% also see a risk in the reliability of AI models. In this context, 68% see the main motivation for AI integration in a pioneering role in innovation and strategic future planning, while more than half are looking for process improvements and resource savings. Interestingly, nearly the half believe that generative AI will be significantly present or even all over in their company in the future.  Companies are in a critical phase as far as industrial services are concerned. An early introduction of GenAI can have a significant impact on future competitiveness. More than 60% of Germans are skeptical about AI improving their lives, yet 77% believe it will empower the already powerful. These findings, from a study by Progressives Zentrum, highlight a complex relationship with AI. Interestingly, over a third of respondents think AI will boost the competitiveness of German companies. However, our discussions with partners and customers reveal a growing disillusionment with AI, especially in cyber-physical systems. Some even predict an impending "AI winter," where the overhyped technology fails to deliver. Yes, AI is often overhyped, but also underestimated. In my (subjective) experience, many companies mistakenly think they can simply download a deep learning model, write some Python code, and achieve magical results. While they might get an 80% solution, it rarely scales to the necessary quality. This isn't AI's fault; it's a misunderstanding of its complexity and the expertise required to use it effectively. And AI should not be seen as a solo star but as part of a larger system. The system, not AI alone, must provide the full value at the necessary level of quality. Despite these valid concerns, I firmly believe the biggest risk with AI is not using it. However, AI alone has no intrinsic value. We create value through services, products, and systems, with AI being just one component of such cognitive systems. While it might be unlikely for most German companies to develop leading AI products, it's almost certain that most future software-intensive systems will incorporate AI. Think of AI not as the soloist but as the English horn in Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9—integral yet part of a larger orchestra. Forming an orchestra requires engineering, even though it is often seen as outdated. But when we focus on engineering cognitive systems, we unlock AI's full potential. By integrating AI into innovative systems with the necessary quality, we can truly revolutionize our industries. We must shift our focus away from the dazzling allure of AI as a standalone star and concentrate on our core strength: the engineering of highly innovative systems and services.
