Here's another opportunity for folks in WI to advocate for positive investment in the state budget. The PACE (Purchase of Agricultural Conservation Easement) program is up for funding in the 2025-2027 budget and the American Farmland Trust created an online petition you can sign in support of it at the link below. https://lnkd.in/gdy7kEFa This program helps to fund agricultural easements preventing farms from being subdivided, giving existing farmers some revenue for their land, and making the purchase price of the land lower, allowing new farmers to be able to afford to purchase their first farm.

Tennessee faces a critical challenge: if current development trends continue, we could lose over one million acres of farmland in the next 20 years. According to the American Farmland Trust (AFT), Hamilton County alone is projected to lose nearly 19,000 acres to development/sprawl. This loss threatens our agricultural heritage and the future of our local food systems. From 1997 to 2017, Tennessee lost 1.1 million acres of farmland, an alarming trend that has only accelerated in recent years. With an average of 237 acres lost daily, we are among the most threatened states in the nation. But with thoughtful policies and smart growth strategies, we can significantly reduce this loss. AFT's "smart growth" projections suggest that with better development practices, Hamilton County could cut farmland loss by more than half. This means supporting sustainable farming, protecting land with conservation easements, and encouraging policies that prioritize agricultural preservation. We must act now to safeguard our farmland, ensuring a resilient future for Tennessee’s agriculture and communities. LEARN MORE: https://lnkd.in/gvnbsADr

What are conservatives *conserving* anymore? In light of the 2024 Inventory of Lost Farmland Report, agricultural land should be at the top of that list. See my article in the Daily Journal on giving a voice to Hoosier Homestead Farm families. Indiana farmers feed our state--and the world--and HB 1265 gives a voice to the farming families that have been doing just that the longest. https://lnkd.in/eN45KMZu

Loss of Ohio farmland — converted to residential, commercial and industrial uses — far exceeds farmland preservation. Farmland losses of this magnitude do not bode well for Ohio’s #1 industry — agriculture. The U.S. government even considers this to be a national security issue. For a bit of a dive into this important issue, please read this article. Michele Grim, MPH, LP.D. Bill Wolf Jessica Grisier Brian Baldridge Jeff Duling

Rising sea levels, degraded landscapes, and regenerative farming. The potential of an approach like this is astounding. It opens the door to further research, innovation, farming and ecological rehabilitation in less-than-traditional ways. Don't get me wrong, there's going to be hiccups and issues for each location that decides to go this route, but it's better than letting your land compact and degrade. This is a start and it's fascinating to learn about. Farmland ownership and the shifts in who is buying, whether it’s families, heirs, or investors, are undeniably a hot topic right now. While 70% of the land we handle still goes to farmers, investor activity, especially for larger parcels, is steadily growing.
