I am thrilled to share a significant publication in Toxicologic Pathology by the Pathology 2.0 working group of the European Society of Toxicologic Pathology (ESTP). This work showcases the vital collaboration between pathologists and mass spectrometry (MS) imaging scientists, a partnership that has been flourishing at AstraZeneca for many years. This single publication is a comprehensive guide to mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) applications in the pathology field. It features 13 case studies covering key topics such as mechanisms of toxicity, diagnostic biomarkers, spatial pharmacokinetics, local drug exposure advantages and challenges, as well as future trends. The research brings together 10 pathologists and 5 MSI experts from academia, biotech, and pharmaceutical sectors to illustrate how innovative approaches are revolutionizing drug development. I’d like to acknowledge Enrico Vezzali (Idorsia Pharmaceuticals Ltd) for his commitment and engagement to make this possible as well as all co-authors Michael Becker, Seong-Wook Yun (Boehringer Ingelheim), Barbara Lenz, Fernando Romero-Palomo (Roche), Marjolein van Heerden (The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson), Caroline Chipeaux, Bogdan Munteanu, Dinesh Bangari (Sanofi), Thomas Lemarchand (StageBio), Bhanu Singh BVSc, MS, DACVP, DABT, Fellow IATP (Gilead Sciences), Celine Thuilliez (Novaxia Pathology), Andrew Smith (Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca) and Rob Vreeken (Maastricht University).
