Annual #PR predictions post coming at ya (this time in a *new & improved* format thanks to our partner BrandSlap).
I know you've been on the edge of your seat in anticipation!
📧 Email isn’t going anywhere, but AI inundation abounds. Bot pitches are clogging journalists' inboxes. We'll have to lean on other channels like X, LinkedIn and QWOTED for pitching.
📰 Publications as a piece of the puzzle. "Traditional media is dead and founder-led comms is the future" was the common refrain this year. What I believe to be true about that statement is that we'll be doing more comms via other channels in 2025 — LinkedIn, speaking, internal, short-form video, etc. Wrote about this recently for MarketingProfs (in the comments).
📐 We’re on the cusp of a breakthrough in PR measurement. More on that in the video, but I am impressed by what I am seeing from tools like Memo.
🤝 Are events back... for real this time? Based on what I am hearing from clients, we'll see a comeback next year for in-person activities. I am talking interesting, mid to large-scale events with cool activations and knowledgeable speakers… not desksides :).
What did I miss?
I have made predictions about this ASPR industry for probably the last four or five years. This year one just popped into my head around the idea of PR measurement. When I first started doing PR about 10 years ago, I started with mainly consumer clients and back then it was pretty easy to measure our impact. We would have a future story, go live and say the Wall Street Journal and that same day we would sell 1000 units. So no one was really holding our feet to the fire asking us like what our specific are wiring. Was well, we all know that the buying cycle is a lot longer and a lot more complicated than that of a consumer product. I think also if you're working in this industry, it is no shock to anyone who struggled with the idea of measurement for quite some time. I really feel like we're on the cusp of a breakthrough and I'm super excited about that. We relied on vanity metrics like unique visitors per month. We're probably far too long and I think our clients are all starting to ask for a little bit more. We do our best at hand blast tracking metrics like how many backlinks did we have this quarter or how many keyword inclusions did we get in our coverage. This quarter, even when as far as like developing our own metric called Story Score, that really helps try and track the quality of coverage, not just the quantity. But I am interested to see what some of these PR measurement platforms are doing. Some of them are partnering directly with publications to get the readership data on the articles that we're securing for our clients. So that's really going to level the playing field when it comes to something like securing an exclusive. We're trying to decide, even with Footwear 2 reporters trying to figure out which of their stories are most widely read. So I'm excited to see what that brings next year and I think it will make it a lot easier. For professionals to actually reach their target audience.
🔮 thank you, resident Oracle.🔮
Agreed, social pitching and tools like SOS/Qwoted are suuuuper necessary.
In 2025 I wonder if we'll see more reporters/editors creating their own email lists to get sources, similar to what Rachel Wolfe from the WSJ does!
Is AI taking over our inboxes? 🤖 Are in-person events making a comeback? 🎟️ Is traditional media really dead? 🪦
