The power to stop and start again 💪 In an interview with SQOOL TV, author Camille Brunel was talking about his new anti-speciesist books for children. Asked to define the term, he says: - Animals are not so different from each other (or from us humans). - The difference in how we treat individuals should not be determined by the body they are born into. His response makes sense (and makes a good point) but it's not the clearest expression of speciesism. So, he does something wonderful. He says: "Ahhh, I've explained that badly" The host invites him to reformulate the definition, which he does expertly 😎 Speciesism = discrimination against someone based on their species. Now viewers get a clear understanding of this important concept. They also get to see someone think through a complex problem and improve their answer in real time, which is: - An important skill that demonstrates intelligence and self-awareness - Much more impressive than blustering on (like a politician would!) Stopping, re-thinking and re-formulating are not weaknesses. They are strengths.

Research suggests that animal characters in stories help enhance young children's theory of mind. In my 199th post on WordPress, I explore possible reasons for the same, and write how the collective unconscious and Aldous Huxley's concept of the Mind at Large may help explain why animal characters continue to be a popular choice among authors, even centuries after exemplars of the genre (if it could indeed be considered a genre), the Panchatantra and Aesop's fables, were first narrated.
