How can #Europe's #economy keep up in a world of ever-increasing geo-economic tensions and fewer recognized rules that other global players want to play by? Enrico Letta has presented his report on the future of the EU #singlemarket, and it is essentially about this question. It was commissioned by the governments of the member states and the EU Commission, because the pressure on the economy is huge. At the heart of the report: #Energy and #Industry. If we do not make progress in expanding the energy infrastructure and the energy market, we will be left behind internationally, is how Letta's warning can be summarized. He also looks outwards: How can Europe keep up with the global competition for #criticalrawmaterials? How can the risks to public safety be avoided if third countries invest in the #energysector here? What offers need to be made to key energy partners in Africa, for example? In the area of industrial policy, Letta is calling for the europeanization of state aid in order to reduce imbalances between countries. This debate is unlikely to be easy. Without greater trust between the member states, it will be difficult to make progress with the reforms, according to Letta's warning. #Poland's presidency of the Council of the European Union will contribute to the EU's strategic direction over the next 6 months, influencing key energy and decarbonisation policy initiatives such as the Clean Industrial Deal. Today, Poland presented its programme in European Parliament. Poland's geographic and political position could amplify Central and Eastern European perspectives, emphasising energy security, technology optionality, industrial decarbonisation, and a just energy transition. United States Secretary for Energy, Jennifer Granholm, and Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, held the second #UnitedStates-#Australia Ministerial Dialogue on Clean Energy on the margins of the #G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial in Foz do Iguaçu, #Brazil on October 4, 2024.   The Ministerial Dialogue on Clean Energy marked the culmination of a year of progress since its inaugural meeting to realise the shared commitment to elevate climate and #cleanenergy cooperation to the third pillar of our alliance, as set forth by leaders in May 2023 through the Climate, Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Transformation Compact (Compact) and reinforced by Prime Minister Albanese’s meetings with President Biden in #Washington in October 2023 and #Delaware in September 2024.   Ministers discussed the need to work together to support and secure clean #solar supply chains, which may leverage both countries’ significant investments and complementary resources in their respective solar industries in support of our leaders’ intent to collaborate on #cleanenergy supply chains. As a first step to investigating the feasibility of an end-to-end solar supply chain, Ministers noted their intent to conduct and report on techno-economic market studies on the solar industry, including polysilicon processing and trade. This work will leverage solar cooperation between #ARENA and the U.S. Department of Energy (#DOE), and the Australia–U.S. Clean Energy Industry Council.   Ministers acknowledged the significant economic opportunities of the global clean energy transformation to net zero by mid-century. They emphasised that both countries’ significant investments in their #renewableenergy industries, through the US #InflationReductionAct and Australia’s Future Made in Australia plan respectively, offered unparalleled opportunities for collaboration to shape a transformed global energy future. Ministers voiced their expectation that, through the Compact, joint U.S.–Australia efforts would support partners in the #IndoPacific as they meet their #decarbonisation and supply chain diversification goals.

Today, the US Dept. of Treasury unveiled the final section #45V Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit guidelines, marking a significant milestone for the industry. This release introduces crucial changes in response to industry feedback, including: - Incrementality: Allowing for up to 200MW of #Nuclear power from existing reactors facing retirement risks, considerations for states adhering to strict GHG emissions & renewable portfolio standards, and specific conditions for power generation with #CCS. These adjustments will expand opportunities for diverse generation sources, particularly benefiting states like California and Washington, along with those boasting substantial nuclear capacities. - Time Matching: Implementing a 2-year delay in hourly matching requirements until 2030, alongside offering flexibility in the hourly-accounting approach post-2030. This aligns the US timeline with European standards and offers practical accounting leeway annually. - Regionality: Introducing clarifications allowing for the demonstration of electricity transfer between grid regions, a notably positive step, especially for projects situated in regions bordering multiple grid zones.
