What are Money Market Funds? MMFs are collective investment schemes that raise funds by selling shares or when the unit trust legal structure is used, units, to the public 1. MMFs provide a reliable store of value, or a degree of capital certainty, by investing primarily in short-term, high-quality liquid financial instruments. These financial instruments includes:- * Money market instruments such as short-term government debt and short-term corporate debt commonly known as commercial paper. * Shares or units of other MMFs. * Bank deposits. * Tradable debt instruments with a residual maturity of less than one year. 2. Shares or units in MMFs may be redeemed- that is, the investors' funds can be withdrawn-immediately or on short notice. * his results in liquidity risks similar to those faced by banks. MMFs, even though they invest largely in short-term instruments, will have a mismatch between the relatively longer maturity of their assets and the demand or short-term maturity of their liabilities. MMFs are close substitutes for bank deposits. However, unlike bank deposits, they are not covered by deposit-insurance. Another distinction is that the par or nominal value of MMF shares or units is not guaranteed. Investors are entitled to the par or nominal value plus or minus any changes in value. Although MMF sponsors typically attempt to maintain a market value at or above the specified par value, losses can reduce the market value to less than par value. In contrast, a bank depositor is entitled to return of the specified amount of the deposit plus interest in accordance with the terms of the contract. The nominal or par value of the deposit is not subject to fluctuation. The systemic importance of MMFs varies across countries. In countries with highly developed money-markets, MMFs can be important as sources of liquidity and stores of household wealth, and as providers of short-term credit through their purchase of debt instruments. #fsi #nondeposittakers #edximf
