Amendment No. 13 to the Protection of Privacy Law was recently approved by the Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee and moves towards second and third readings in the Knesset. Apparently good news? The Protection of Privacy Law was approved in the Knesset in 1981, and since then went through mostly minor amendments. Due to that, there are significant gaps and uncertainties between the current reality and privacy challenges (in location data, AI and more), and the written law. Will the new amendment bridge the gap and overcome the technological, economic and security challenges Israel is facing? Will it help in dealing with information leaks and cyber attacks? To further learn about the essence of the amendment, what it includes and what it lacks, listen to the following fascinating Hebrew podcast ‘CyberCyber’ with Noam Rotem and Ido Keinan, featuring Adv. This is a very very significant decision in AI Act implementation
The first statutory deadline for EU countries under the #AIAct is fast approaching. By Nov. 2, they must indicate the public authorities in charge of protecting fundamental rights. To this end, the Commission issued an interpretative note, seen by MLex, that clarifies which authorities can take this role and how it will fit in the broader AI enforcement architecture. Spoiler alert: the fundamental rights supervisors will have significant investigative powers. https://lnkd.in/ebcujzFm

Today, I had the privilege of debating a critical topic: Is government data collection a violation of our democratic rights? This issue strikes a particularly deep chord, especially in the aftermath of the previous regime's censorship of social media—a stark reminder of the fragile balance between governance and freedom. As computer scientists, we are not merely technologists but also custodians of information. In this era where data quite literally equates to power, it is our duty to ensure that this power is wielded with responsibility and transparency, safeguarding the democratic values we cherish, believe in, and wish to see evolve for the betterment of the country.
