A VP Marketing at a B2B, dev-focused startup recently reached out to ask me some questions about #ProductMarketing. We spoke about what a product marketing manager is responsible for, what skills to look for in a PMM, best practices for onboarding a new PMM hire, etc. In this video I share the inherent challenge of finding the rare combination of someone who can be very analytical, understand complex technologies and products, and yet still have a very well developed right side of the brain, so they can creatively and compellingly communicate said tech/product to their target audience. In a future post I'll dig into how I find these special people, how I make sure they have what it takes for the job and red flags to be aware of. Also, I just wanted to dedicate this post to 2 very special PMMs that I'm super fortunate to have on my team, who along with the above mentioned VP Marketing, have inspired this post.

Searching for a Product Management Role in Hard or Soft Goods? Change your search to Brand Manager. Over the last 5 years, this has become the new role title for creating Brand and Product Strategy for something you can touch and feel. When Agile and Jobs To Be Done and the increase in SaaS came about, the role of Product Manager has been rolled into IT speak. Many days, it appears that 80% of the roles posted under Product Management are connected with IT development. The roles are written word for word a match for anyone with Hard Good Skills until it says must have 5 years experience in some kind of coding, computer program, etc. As there have been a few big layoffs for leadership folks in Brand Management in Wisconsin within the last couple months, wondering has anyone made the the jump from Hard or Soft Goods to IT? How have you convinced the hiring manager or recruiter to connect with you? Personal connections are the key, please share your experiences!

🚀🚀I’m seeing more and more Growth Product Manager roles pop up in Europe in recent months. 🚀🚀 This tells me that: 1) VC Money is flowing back into tech. 2) CEOs recognise that user acquisition, retention and engagement are not only impacted by Marketing, they are intertwined with Product and Technology. Bringing them together through a Growth PM accelerates this impact. 3) The commercialisation of the PM role continues to gain traction. Growth PMs are fulfilling parts of the Marketing scope of work alongside the technology aspects of Product. I’m a strong believer in bringing the Marketing and Product worlds closer together.
