The concept of the Global South is gaining traction in international relations, with China and other countries actively incorporating it into their rhetoric. China aims to bolster the BRICS grouping and assert the political leadership of emerging nations by introducing novel “global initiatives” focusing on development, security, and civilization. Simultaneously, India is also vying for leadership within the Global South, positioning itself not merely as a critic but as a crucial link to the Global North within the framework of the Indo-Pacific strategy. What are the core components of Beijing’s strategy towards the Global South? How can New Delhi leverage its pivotal position in this dynamic? Furthermore, what trajectory might the emerging blocs such as BRICS and the Indo-Pacific region follow in the future? Putin Meets Xi at SCO Summit: Countering Western Influence Join me as I attempt to unravel the geopolitical strategies of Putin & Xi at the SCO Summit, as they work together to counter Western influence! The SCO Summit, which just concluded in Astan, Khsahsthan, has garnered significant attention worldwide, with many analysts viewing it as a crucial platform for regional leaders to discuss pressing global issues and strengthen economic ties. As a geopolitical analyst, I ask: Will the SCO summit in Astana end the unipolar order? Interestingly, the summit adopted what it called the "Global Unity for Just Peace, Harmony and Development" initiative. This year's summit is particularly noteworthy, given the ongoing tensions between the East and the West. Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping are undoubtedly two of the most influential figures in global politics today. As the leaders of Russia and China, respectively, they have been instrumental in shaping the Eurasian landscape and countering Western dominance. The West, particularly the United States, has long been viewed as a dominant force in global politics. Its influence is felt across the world, from the Middle East to Eastern Europe, and even in the Asia-Pacific region. However, in recent years, the rise of Russia and China has posed significant challenges to this dominance. The two nations have been actively working to promote multipolarity and reduce their dependence on Western institutions. Moreover, the ongoing sanctions and trade wars have only added to the tensions, making it essential for Russia and China to find ways to counter Western influence and protect their interests. The SCO Summit has a rich history, dating back to 2001 when it was established as the Shanghai Five grouping. Initially, the organization focused on regional security and border demarcation issues, but over time, it has evolved to include economic cooperation, trade, and cultural exchange. The SCO has grown currently to 10 members with Belarus being admitted during the summit as a full member. In conclusion, the meeting between Putin and Xi at the SCO Summit holds significant implications for global geopolitics. As the two leaders work together to counter Western influence and promote multipolarity, it is essential to understand the challenges that lie ahead. The ongoing tensions between the East and the West will undoubtedly shape the future of global politics, and this meeting is a crucial step towards a more multipolar world. Why Taiwan Matters to the US and the World Hudson Institute 11 OCT. 2024 China’s menacing behavior toward Taiwan should terrify the international community. First, the island is indispensable for world’s tech industry, and according to a Bloomberg Economics estimate, a Chinese blockade of Taiwan could cost the global economy $10 trillion—about 10 percent of global GDP. Second, a conflict over Taiwan would create geopolitical fallout, and a Chinese victory would upend the current world order. Lastly, Taiwanese freedom matters, and the example of Asia’s top-ranked democracy would be lost if Beijing coerced 23 million Taiwanese into servitude. The United States therefore needs to create layers of deterrence among democratic allies and partners to deter China. Executive Director of the Alliance of Democracies Foundation Jonas Parello-Plesner, author of The Battle for Taiwan, will join Hudson’s Patrick Cronin to discuss Taiwan’s importance to the US and the world.

It is the Central Asian states themselves that are seeking to diversify their foreign policy engagements. Rather than choosing between Russia and China, they recognize the value of having both powers actively involved in the region. Given Turkey's increasingly pivotal role in addressing issues in the Middle East and Russia, also a time to reconsider how our bilateral relationship with Turkey can support our China policy. Good reminder on Turkey's historical and linguistic ties with China's C. Asian neighbors.
