🇦🇷 #Argentina: End foreign exchange controls – yes or no? That is not the question, say renowned Argentine economists Rodolfo Santangelo and Enrique Szewach. In an article for the daily newspaper LA NACION, they discuss Argentina's ongoing debate about lifting foreign exchange controls ("cepo"). The basically liberal economists argue against extreme positions - immediate lifting or indefinite retention of controls - and propose a balanced approach. The currency controls, originally implemented by the Kirchner administration, failed to control inflation or stabilize the economy. On the other hand, the complete liberalization between 2016 and 2019 brought short-term capital but no lasting stability. The authors believe that Argentina should aim for a single exchange market but only once macroeconomic conditions—low inflation, fiscal surplus, and solid reserves—are firmly in place. In the short term, they suggest keeping some regulations on foreign asset purchases and tourism to prevent a surge in dollar demand that the country can't support. They also advocate for a segmented market where individuals can buy foreign currency for personal use without depleting central bank reserves. The authors recommend gradual adjustments in the exchange rate, avoiding drastic changes, and argue that an orderly path to currency unification should be part of a comprehensive program to stimulate recovery and long-term growth. ¿Salir o no del cepo? It appears that the current leadership in Bolivia is more focused on internal political issues rather than implementing a strategic plan to stabilize and improve the country's economic health. Argentina’s economic #outlook in December 2024 reflects a recovery from prolonged crisis. The fiscal balance is set to end the year in equilibrium for the first time in 15 years, supported by aggressive spending cuts despite lower revenues. The crawling peg policy (2% monthly) has helped reduce inflation, projected at 120% in December 2024, though it slowed reserve accumulation (and led to an overvalued currency). Inflation is expected to fall to 35% by the end of 2025. Economic activity rebounded from recession, with GDP forecasted to shrink 3.8% in 2024 but grow 5.5% in 2025, driven by consumption and investment. Public support for the government remains strong, fostering optimism for continued reforms. In addition, it could benefit from the tailwind of Donald Trump's administration, which would have positive implications for Argentina in the short term, according to BBVA's analysis.
