For far too long, ingredient manufacturers and sponsors have exploited a loophole that has allowed new ingredients and chemicals, often with unknown safety data, to be introduced into the U.S. food supply without notification to the FDA or the public. Eliminating the GRAS loophole will provide transparency to consumers, help get our nation’s food supply back on track by ensuring that ingredients being introduced into foods are safe, and ultimately Make America Healthy Again. Wait, how many Food Safety enforcement folks were just laid off at the federal level? Doesn't matter how many regulations you have at an agency that is toothless due to staff layoffs.

The FDA's initiative to eliminate the self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) pathway marks a critical step toward enhancing food safety and regulatory transparency. Currently, over 10,000 chemicals are used in the U.S. food supply, with an estimated 3,000 of them introduced through the self-affirmed GRAS pathway, allowing companies to bypass FDA review. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), this loophole has enabled manufacturers to introduce ingredients without public disclosure or scientific scrutiny, raising significant health concerns. Furthermore, a 2013 study by Pew Charitable Trusts revealed that 100% of self-affirmed GRAS panels were selected by the companies themselves, posing a clear conflict of interest. Eliminating this pathway could significantly enhance food safety, ensuring all ingredients undergo independent FDA evaluation. This move will not only protect public health but also rebuild consumer trust in the U.S. food supply chain, a much-needed transformation in today's market.

Very good. scrutinize the sale of supplements through GRAS classification. Many of them confer no benefits but more than negligible risk.
