Something I coach my designers on: leave the language of design behind and speak in the language of the business (when speaking with leadership, stakeholders, PMs etc.). Designers want the business to succeed and they're always working towards that end. But that doesn't come across to non-designers when talking about "friction" and "ease of use" and (god forbid) "aesthetics." It's important for designers to connect their design decisions to business impact, how it improves user retention, returning customers, conversion rates. UI vs UX: The Ketchup Analogy 🥫 When it comes to designing successful products, understanding the difference between UI (User Interface) and UX (User Experience) is crucial. This ketchup analogy beautifully illustrates how these two aspects of design work together to create a seamless experience for users. UI (User Interface): Think of the classic glass ketchup bottle. It’s designed to look elegant, iconic, and visually appealing. The clean lines and the iconic shape catch the eye and give it a premium feel. But when it comes to functionality, the user often struggles to get the ketchup out. Despite its visual appeal, the interface itself doesn't always make the task easy. UX (User Experience): Enter the squeezable plastic ketchup bottle. It may not have the same premium appearance as the glass bottle, but it’s designed with the user’s convenience in mind. It’s easy to hold, you can control the flow of ketchup precisely, and it eliminates the frustration of “stuck ketchup.” The UX prioritizes functionality, ensuring that the user interaction is simple, smooth, and satisfying. Why is this important? In design, UI is about how things look, while UX is about how things work. A visually stunning design (UI) is meaningless if the user struggles to interact with it. Similarly, even the most functional product (UX) needs to look intuitive and appealing to draw users in. The goal is to strike a balance between the two: Create interfaces that are visually engaging. Ensure the interaction is effortless and delightful. Takeaway for Designers: As professionals, we must put ourselves in the user’s shoes to ensure that our designs go beyond just “looking good” to also “working well.” A great product is where UI and UX work hand in hand to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and the overall experience.
