𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Founders should maintain the majority of shares while reserving equity for key hires and advisors. 2️⃣ 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Fundraising leads to dilution, but it’s worth it if it grows the overall value of the company. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝗮𝗽 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Keep your cap table simple and structured, especially in early funding rounds. ----- Follow All Chance to learn from more innovative insights.

I have noticed that more candidates from tier 1 prop shops and quant funds are showing interest in engaging with smaller shops offering start-up environments. Why? - Increased autonomy and independence. - Increased flexibility allowing hybrid and remote setups. - Increased ownership facilitating direct impact on projects and decisions. - Larger upsides with total compensation. - Less bureaucracy enabling swift decision-making and rapid actions. Ultimately, many candidates seek a dynamic and empowering work environment that prioritizes autonomy, flexibility, ownership, and efficiency—qualities that are often more prevalent in smaller, emerging firms. #InsearchofAlpha #QuantitativeTrading

This is one of only 20 social enterprises in the world that has achieved unicorn status ($1b valuation) and one of the co-founders, Tony Jamous, is a Lebanese who wanted to solve a problem that most youth from vulnerable communities face, especially women. They solved it by supporting remote work. HR Factory is a social enterprise in Lebanon solving the exact same problem for youth in Lebanon and clients around the world. In fact, they are Oyster’s partner for Lebanon. HAIVO and Bridge. Outsource. Transform (B.O.T) are social enterprises offering their clients around the world the ability to outsource data and AI projects to their freelancers in Lebanon and Jordan. CONCAT Tech is a social enterprise doing the same for website development. The difference between them and Oyster ? There is nearly no funding available for social enterprises from the Middle East ! Time to change this if we want to see more unicorns and exits in our region - simply because clients will prefer to work with a business that has an impact. #impactinvestinginMENA

Founders often ask, “How much equity should early hires get?” While there’s not much publicly available data, Carta recently looked at the equity grants for nearly 5,000 employees who were the first 5 hires at early startups last year. • 1st Hire: 1-1.5% median equity • 2nd Hire: 0.8% • 3rd Hire: 0.65% • 4th Hire: 0.4% • 5th Hire: 0.31-0.34% Only 7% of early hires got 5% or more of the companies. The equity really drops off fast after hire #1. Does anything surprise you about this data?

About a year ago, in September 2023, I left full-time employment to start working on Openseed VC 💜 This decision came during what is arguably the toughest --- fundraising environment for emerging managers since 2015. As I reflect and journal co-incidentally on today, my birthday, I’m struck by how much we have achieved so much in just twelve months: In the spirit of counting my blessings, I spelt it out; - Built a compelling fund brand and strategy 📈 - Fundraised from LPs 🤝 - Structured and incorporated the fund - Received regulatory approval and incorporated - Reached the first close of the fund 🔒 - Had a strong public launch 🎉 - Built a lean team and onboarded advisors 🧑🤝🧑 - Recruited 60+ operators for the operator network 👥 - Received 850+ founder applications 📑 - Conducted 200+ founder calls 📞 - Made two investments in Europe 🌍 & Africa 🌍 Just a year ago, Openseed VC as a fund didn't exist, and I am so excited for what's to come! We aren't just building a fund; we are creating an innovative financial institution that is the first investor in talented, experienced, and diverse operators from day zero. This is just the beginning; it's day zero for us too. ✨ If you're hesitant to take the leap to pursue something you know you were born to do.
