Eyal Harel’s Post

Here's to the boring stuff that will make all the difference! When world leaders gather in #NY on climate week to raise the alarm bells on what we can do more, sooner - freshwater is the answer. This disproportionally productive carbon sink is one if the main keys the world holds to fighting global warming. There's not a moment to lose! #water #envirinment #globalwarming #climateweek

🚨 Exciting Developments in Carbon Storage! 🚨 Recent publications in top-tier scientific journals are revealing groundbreaking insights into the #longterm #carbon #sequestration potential of #freshwater systems. Contrary to previous assumptions, these studies show that carbon can be permanently stored for #geological #timescales in these ecosystems, playing a critical role in mitigating climate change. One study, published in March 2024, led by Prof. Sebastian Kuśmierz from the Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy w Lublinie, Poland, highlights how small floodplain lakes can immobilize significant amounts of carbon in stable, insoluble forms despite decreasing water surfaces. Another research, published in June 2024 by Prof. Hongtao Duan and his team from the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIGLAS), demonstrates a substantial increase in organic carbon storage across 24,366 Chinese #lakes over nearly four decades, driven by human activities and natural dynamics. These findings underscore the crucial role of #freshwater systems in global carbon management strategies. 🌍💧 Publications: 1️⃣ Small floodplain lakes as a substantial source of CO₂ emission and carbon burial https://lnkd.in/ekHbhBCr 2️⃣ Substantial increase of organic carbon storage in Chinese lakes Dong Liu, Kun Shi, Peng Chen, Nuoxiao Yan, Lishan Ran, Tiit Kutser, Andrew N.
