#IndianRailways, one of the largest railway networks globally, is undergoing a transformative phase of modernization, with a commitment to enhancing passenger experience, safety, and operational efficiency, unprecedented investment has been committed by the Government in upgrading infrastructure, technology, and services, with an increased indigenization push, India is bound to be a railway manufacturing hub, not only for catering to the domestic market, but also to emerge as a Global leader in the supply chain. This market for rail- based mobility ecosystem manufacturing shall push to the 35 trillion USD economy @ 2047 and the vision of the Hon’ble #PrimeMinister’s #viksitbharat. These digital interventions and role of IT-Big Data and Analytics in efficient planning, operations and decision making, reminds me of unprecedented ICT initiatives, I was associated with, when I was posted as the Vice President CMC (under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India), from 1993 – 2001 and subsequently, as the Vice President TCS – CMC Business Synergies, under the TATA Sons Group from 2001 – 2005 and subsequently, as the Director Corporate Strategy Hewlett Packard India from 2005 – 2010. I was privileged to have been associated with successful conceptualization & operationalization of unprecedented & mega ICT projects, like the Centralized Passenger Reservation System (IMPRESS 1 & IMPRESS 2), Advanced Railway Ticketing System, Freight Operating Systems, Advanced Signalling & Track Systems (FOIS 1 & FOIS 2, etc). Subsequently, #CMC played an important role in spearheading the #ICT initiatives in the Metro Networks in India, starting with the Delhi Metro. Today, we need to ensure time-bound modernization & upgradation of the Railway’s Digital Technologies during the transformative phase of modernization of these initiatives, when Indian Railways plans to contribute 1.5% of the total GDP, which is around USD 51.30 billion. Today as the Chairman The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - SCO Business Council Secretariat, Republic of India, I am very enthusiastically pushing the cooperation for modernization of Railways & Metros, amongst the 10 SCO Member Nations, with the focus on Green initiatives, for sustainability-driven Rail Transport System. In a major milestone, India's metro network has expanded to become the third-largest in the world, with a total length of 1,000 kilometers. Daily passenger ridership has also witnessed exponential growth, rising from 28 lakh in 2014 to over one crore, reflecting a 2.5 times increase. On July 26, 2024, I along with my colleague Titas Roy attended FICCI’s "5th Future Rail India 2024: Accelerating Towards Viksit Bharat" conference. We had the opportunity to network with and gain insights from leading figures in the rail sector, engaging in thought-provoking discussions that are shaping the future of Indian railways. Highlights: 📌 Mr. Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member (Infrastructure), Railway Board, presented India Railways' journey since 1853, showcasing remarkable progress that Indian railways has achieved. 📌 Mr. SK Sinha, Additional Member (Planning), Railway Board, put forward a comparative analysis of India’s freight carrier capacity with global players. He emphasized the potential economic boost from increased capacity, targeting an ambitious goal of 10 billion tons of freight movement through railways by 2047. 📌 Mr. VIVEK Gupta MD NHSRCL, illuminated contribution of high speed rail in passenger movement, experience and how it help boost the economy. 📌 Mr. rajesh prasad, discussed RVNL's robust order book and delivery capacity, stressing the importance of PPP models and digital technologies in enhancing railway efficiency. My takeaway: Geospatial technology is revolutionizing railway operations in India.
