Paul Ramsey: PostGIS Day 2024 Summary What’s better than GIS Day? The day after: PostGIS Day! 🎉 Hosted by none other than Paul Ramsey, this annual shindig brought together 22 geo-wizards from across the globe. The agenda? Everything PostGIS: from "old-school" cartography with Joshua Carlson to Brian Timoney's minimalist mapping with—I kid you not—Excel. Who knew spreadsheets could be so geographical? Rekha Khandhadia impressed with her geo-magic using GeoParquet and a hefty 300GB of data. And let’s not forget Brian Loomis, turning PostGIS and PostgreSQL into CARB-compliance ninjas for Nikola Motors. Steve Pousty dipped his toes into AI without causing a singularity. Refreshing! Meanwhile, we ventured into urban climate wonders, routing conundrums, and API cornucopias. Hats off to Kirk Menke for putting QGIS adoption trends on the map. Literally. The day was chock-full of 3D data spirals, volumetric juggling acts, and yes, even a touch of PostgreSQL code within the Go language by Tom Payne. Intrigued? Dive into the full playlist on Crunchy Data’s YouTube channel. PostGIS Day: where spatial databases throw a better party than your average Wednesday. 🍕 You can find the full article here: https://postgr.es/p/6IG

SAERI’s Jack Ingledew-Gale presented the introduction/refresher to the Falkland Islands Data Portal/WebGIS to Falkland Islands Government (FIG) employees last week. This covered topics such as local datasets available, spatial data management, and visualisation. These sessions help raise awareness of what data is available and potential uses for geospatial projects on the islands Jack also helped FIG Planning team access existing data and provided two members of the Environment Department with an introduction to using QGIS geospatial software. #learnmore #QGIS #dataportal #datascience #spatialdata

New Heights with DEMs Whenever we work with customers new to Earth Observation (EO) data, a great place to start is digital elevation models (DEMs). They are intuitive, available, and extremely useful. We have found that with Felt, these datasets can also be wonderfully performant. Below is a great example. With the Netherlands being a low-lying county, one might assume that people try to live as high above ground as possible. Except we see much the opposite here. Contextualized with population data, a simple map tells a powerful story. No downloading. No ETL. Reach out to SeerAI, Inc. for more information on how to utilize data like this with Felt, Esri, Streamlit or the output of your choice.
