The Perplexity complaint filed by a number of NewsCorp Inc brands lays out pretty clearly the copyright battlegrounds of the next few months. The publisher says that the AI platform a) scraped whole catalogues of content word for word without consent or intent to pass any benefit back to the creator - this is similar complaint to New York Times who sent a 'cease and desist' letter last week b) fed that into a content database and tuned the system to make sure professionally edited sources were preferred by their models ("RAG index" is new to me, get used to hearing it) c) allowed their LLM to turn that into answers that variously cited, didn't cite or incorrectly attributed sources to their brands. d) returned no traffic and paid no compensation to the publishers whose work and brand identities had been used for commercial gain. e) Weakened their case to settle with AI companies that did wish to licence the content.
