Royce’s continued partnership with In2scienceUK allowed more students from low socioeconomic and underrepresented backgrounds to complete placements with some of our researchers this year. Royce funding particularly focuses on the In2research programme; allowing researchers to mentor participants on 8-week summer placements that form part of a year-long cohort programme for undergraduates. These projects offer a chance for researchers working across the Royce partnership to mentor a young scientist, share insights into what research life entails, and build connections to upcoming talent. For the participants, the programme opens the door on a future research career, helps them to network beyond their immediate course and lecturers, and get involved in real-world scientific research. One success story for last year’s cohort is Mariam, who spent her placement with Dr Gunnar Kusch, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge (Both pictured). Before committing to a postdoc, it’s important to weigh its value for your career. Consider these key points: ⚫ Postdocs are essential for academic and research roles like professors or lab investigators but are not always required for industry positions. ⚫Choose a research field that expands on your PhD to enhance your skills and boost your marketability. ⚫Factor in family and career goals. Apply for jobs early to avoid gaps in employment and consider age limits for faculty positions. ⚫A postdoc isn’t mandatory for entering industry, so weigh all your opportunities.

Before you start your Postdoc
Before you start your Postdoc, consider these practical points. By understanding the importance of postdoctoral experience, you can better appreciate how it fits into your overall career and can help you to take decisions about doing a postdoc. 1. Identify if a postdoc is really necessary for your career goals. Many people pursue postdocs because it's a common path. If you want to become a professor or an investigator at a lab, postdoctoral experience is often required. For careers in industry, a postdoc may be beneficial for some positions but is not always necessary. 2. Select a research area slightly broader and different than your PhD. By doing so, you can develop a more comprehensive and adaptable skill set, increasing your chances of success in the competitive job market. 3. At this stage, you may have a family or be planning to start one. Create a future roadmap and apply for jobs early. I know many postdocs find themselves without a job when their contract ends, leading to frustration. 4. Remember that PhDs can also transition into industry roles. Postdoctoral positions are not compulsory for entering the industry. #postdoc #research #career #students #phd
