Peter Steins’s business, Peeko Oysters in New Suffolk, consumes a lot of energy on a regular basis just to maintain its usual operations. As a result, Peter’s energy bills can be quite high, eating into his bottom line.
“One of the things that I was lacking was somebody to come in, at an affordable rate, to do an energy audit, and understand, ‘OK, here are the systems that you have today. Let me help you design a new system for what you can use going forward,’” he said.
That’s where the Long Island Clean Energy Hub came in. “The process has been wonderful,” Peter said of his experience working with CCE Suffolk Clean Energy Coordinator August Ruckdeschel. August introduced Peter to a NYSERDA- and PSEG-approved contractor, who came and did an audit at no cost to Peter. The contractor is working with Peter to bring in new equipment that can meet the same needs of his current equipment but using far less energy. That is expected to not only save his business money, but it’s also going to allow Peter to scale up his business like he’s long wanted to do.
Peter wants business owners like him to know that there are programs out there to help them lower their energy bills and — more importantly — that there are educators who can help you navigate that journey.
“I highly recommend utilizing resources like the Long Island Clean Energy Hub,” he said. “Having Augie make recommendations and just as a sounding board has been just a source of comfort. As a small business owner, you got a lot of challenges, you got a lot of different hats that you have to wear over the course of a day. And having somebody's assistance who is there to help with this, at really no cost to me, is something that I didn't know about. So, it's really nice to have that out there.”
