The Climate Smart Buildings Alliance (CSBA), a joint project between EllisDon, RBC and Mattamy Homes, is launching the Responsible Buildings Pact, a cross-industry agreement aimed at increasing the use of low carbon materials in the built environment. This initiative was unveiled yesterday at the CAGBC | Canada Green Building Council's Building Lasting Change conference, with more than 20 companies committing to the Pact. The Responsible Buildings Pact is an open, voluntary, industry-wide agreement for developers, consultants, contractors, and supporters interested in working together to reduce the embodied carbon of the buildings we create. Companies joining the Pact will commit to remaining educated on lower carbon materials, establishing a process to consistently evaluate whether lower carbon materials or design strategies can be used, and publicly reporting the results of their process and evaluations on an annual basis. 🏢 GSA Leads $3.4B Charge to Green Federal Buildings 🌳 The General Services Administration (GSA) is spearheading a monumental $3.4 billion effort to decarbonize federal buildings, representing one of the largest commercial real estate portfolios in the U.S. This ambitious initiative aims to push the GSA’s own portfolio toward net-zero emissions by 2045. By derisking and promoting newer carbon-cutting materials and technologies, the GSA is driving broader market adoption, setting a precedent for the entire building sector. This initiative not only has the potential to significantly reduce emissions from federal buildings but also to drive substantial emissions reductions across the entire building sector, which accounts for about a third of the country’s total emissions. Retrofit plays a critical role in the rapid collaborative action required to limit ecological decline. Systemic design of built environment decarbonisation not only improves quality of life, health and comfort but offers the opportunity to maximise bio-regeneration in built and natural environments. The Environment Act 2021 fails to address the interdependent factors contributing to the climate crisis. The Climate and Nature Bill seeks to address this by recognising and addressing these interdependencies and it needs public support. Tis private member's bill has been brought by Roz Savage MBE and 107 MPs have committed to attending the second reading.
