❓ I have a question for product designers ❓ How do you understand that you’ve reached a certain grade or level in your career, such as transitioning to a senior role? Do you rely solely on performance reviews, or are there other ways you evaluate your growth? And what if there’s no formal performance review process? I’m asking because I often get questions about assessing one’s grade or level. So, I’m curious — do you have a similar need or interest in this topic? Let me know your thoughts!

I always see a hidden question here: "For what?" or "Why?" Why do I need to understand my level? Here are some answers: 1. "I want to be paid more": Performance review is the best way to assess your level, as this process is centralized across the company and deeply integrated with finance and C&B teams. 2. "I want to know where I am in the global market" or "I want to start looking for new opportunities": In this case, you can ask mentors to evaluate your level or simply apply for vacancies at the level you think you've reached. Mentors and companies will give you valuable feedback. 3. "I want to work on more complex and impactful projects": Your level doesn't matter here—just tell your manager you want more responsibilities and take action. 4. "I want to grow professionally": Reflect on your work and get feedback from your teammates, managers, leads, or mentors. Develop your growth plan with your manager. This inevitably leads back to the first point in this list. There could be more answers to the "why" question, and each answer has its own tools or combinations.

I think when you are ready to take responsibility for yourself and others (people, processes, solutions) you can try to be a manager and go on developing in this role. But on my own experience until you try yourself in a managerial or leadership role, you will not understand whether it is for you or not. Do you have the spirit, ambition and energy to lead other people/processes, or are you simply cool in the role of expertise.

I suppose it depends on role in particular company and people who give feedback and make decisions. Let’s say I have all needed skills for senior role, I made some good stuff BUT if I move to new job with tasks that I’ve never done before(mobile designer moved to b2b SaaS), I can’t be a senior 🥲 Yes, I have that amazing career path and rely on my strong communication skills and etc anyway there is still lack of particular experience. And in the opposite, there can be a junior-mid who decide to take more responsibility, worked hard as a solo expert in startup then created a team, set design process and still don’t have 5 years of experience, I think this person is definitely not a junior anymore ☺️ About reviews, I think they are useful in corporate culture to regulate growth of employees. And they can be not objective, because some leaders tend to evaluate designers with their own visions and don’t focus on strong sides.

I think this kind of growth always happens organically. Only a review from the outside (by other people) can determine your the degree of development and grade. Also, having received an assessment from the outside and knowing your growth points, you can develop the missing competencies, independently determine your level based on the previously set requirements and what the market is asking for.

I think every designer has to see there the dependency: the level/grade depends on the level of responsibility the designer is ready (and wants) to take. And it also includes if his colleagues/ team members are ready to divide this strategy. I assume, there is no exact methodology how to grade specialist. But in every company, the top manager (director, team leader, product owner) defines their specific criteria for each role and the level of responsibilities. And there is a question: “what company is the designer targeting?”. Because the Senior Designer in small studio with small projects will be a Middle or Junior+ Designer in huge corporation that develops complex solutions.

When writing a JD for hiring a designer of a particular level, aren't those criteria similar to the expectations for existing designers? All I'm saying is that design as any other function needs a transparent framework for hiring, expectations, growth and evaluation ☺️ I can provide examples of mine, if interested 🙌

I have the same question. Recently I tried to find a course to study something for Sr UX designer I didn't know yet and couldn't find it. They teach what I knew many years ago )) I think this is one of the ideas how to check your grade.

Тому в компаніях повинна бути карта компетенцій. А сам ти не завжди об'єктивно можеш себе оцінити, тому нехай оцінюють роботодавці. But in general, the topic of self—reflection is very relevant. This theme is especially important for джунов and мидлов, because many designers have dunning kruger. Май инглиш вери бед, ай андерстенд. Май бед, гайз
