Yes, thanks Advanced Energy United - a concise, clear explainer about #utility fixed charges, and why the Nevada proposed rate design change shouldn't be enabled. "Typically, utility bills are based on actual electricity and gas usage, perhaps with a modest fixed charge, but recently utilities have been proposing very large fixed charges on top of their already-approved charges and per-usage rates." https://lnkd.in/eCYiqK64

⚡ California's Rising Electricity Rates: Understanding the Impact and Solutions Utility bills are soaring in California, with the average residential electric bill nearly 30% above the national average. Despite concerns, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) continues to greenlight rate hikes for major utilities like PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E. Factors like increased demand, infrastructure upgrades, and policy changes are driving these hikes. However, renewable solutions like solar and energy storage systems offer promising ways to combat rising costs and secure a sustainable energy future. Learn more about the causes and solutions in the full article: https://lnkd.in/gYQkvUWe #ElectricityRates #CaliforniaEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #SolarEnergySolutions #RenewableTech #CleanEnergyFuture #EnergyEfficiency #GreenConvergence☀ 🔋

As U.S. utilities double their 5-year electricity demand projections, high interest rates and California’s NEM 3.0 are putting solar growth on hold. Rising electricity costs, driven by increasing demand from EVs, AI, and more, highlight the urgent need for renewable solutions. The outdated U.S. grid faces limits, requiring new capacity and transmission lines, often funded by higher rates. Renewables, particularly residential solar and energy storage, offer essential relief, providing energy security and cost savings. However, high interest rates and NEM 3.0's reduced compensation rates for excess solar power challenge adoption. Despite this, 77% of homeowners are interested in solar, with many seeking diverse financing options. California's recent legislation to repeal NEM 3.0 signals hope. Solar professionals must continue innovating and advocating for better policies. Collaboration and resilient efforts will help turn solar potential into reality. #renewableenergy #solarenergy #energytransition #cleanenergy #sustainability #gridmodernization #nem3 #homeowners #solarpower #energysecurity #climateaction #netmetering

California faces rising electricity rates, and distributed energy resources (DERs) like rooftop solar, batteries, and EVs could help mitigate grid costs. However, despite growing clean energy technologies, the state has struggled to pass policies that fully leverage these resources. By failing to capitalize on DERs, California risks increasing grid investments, ultimately raising costs for residents. Virtual power plants (VPPs) can play a critical role in balancing electricity demand. Reports suggest that VPPs could provide 15% of the state’s peak grid demand by 2035, saving customers and utilities $550 million annually. Yet, policy support remains lacking, with multiple bills aimed at boosting VPPs stalling in the legislature. As California aims to meet its climate goals, encouraging policies that prioritize distributed energy and grid optimization is crucial. The potential for savings and cleaner energy is significant if the state takes timely action. #renewableenergy #distributedenergy #california #gridupgradation #virtualpowerplants #cleanenergy #evs #policies #batterystorage

I was able to contribute, along with others, to this VOX article about why your power bill keeps going up and how you can reduce the energy you use in your home to help blunt the impacts. Key statements in the article: "Many of the states leading the way to clean energy are actually seeing lower energy prices than the rest of the country. Data from the US Energy Information Administration shows that 17 states, including California and Massachusetts, have increased their share of renewable energy sources by more than 20 percent since 2010. And with the exception of California, all of those states have seen the price of residential rate increases rise more slowly than inflation." https://lnkd.in/eTkc9-Rh

A new report from Energy Innovation finds that clean energy is not driving the increase in electric rates! The articles states, "In fact, some of the smallest electric rate increases have been in states with high rates of wind and solar generation, such as Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico." "Since 2010, average residential electric rates and the U.S. Consumer Price Index both have increased about 40%, the report notes, but average bills have increased only 24%, because of reduced household energy use. Energy-efficiency measures and rising use of distributed resources such as rooftop solar are credited for this." Clean energy is not just more sustainable, but it is also saving American citizens money on their electricity bills! ♻ 🌳 🌎 🌿 https://lnkd.in/gXNS52wR

"With the need for more and more #electricity, and more #transmission lines to get that electricity where we need it, #utilities will need to build increased capacity. It seems as though higher rates will inevitably fund these projects. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Now is the time for #renewables to provide much-needed relief for an aging #grid and support our electricity needs with #cleanenergy. Encouraging the adoption of distributed #residentialsolar and energy #storage at the homeowner level is essential since it can provide energy #security and cost savings to real families and business owners—in addition to increased local generation capacity." 8moDemand is the real driver of price of electricity, and AEU rightly points that out here. Time of use rates need to be adopted to avoid these sorts of charges. Personally as a consumer, I welcome them, why should I subsidize others use during inappropriate times? Utilities keep tiptoeing around the issue, and still catch a lot of flak with these big rate increases. Tear off the bandaid and send the right market signal!
