What does trust in a marketing company look like? At Pohl Strategic, we’ve been reflecting on what trust looks like for us. It actually starts with our team, and the fact that we need to trust each other. As we work together, we’re learning to rely on each other in healthy ways, understanding that we each play a different role on the team, and we have to trust our teammates’ skillsets. Second, we’re earning the trust of our clients by repeatedly serving them well, by showing ourselves to be reliable, by acknowledging and addressing our mistakes, and, overall, by being the trusted partner that our clients deserve. Third, we’re helping our clients earn the trust of their clients by telling their story in a way that communicates their brand identity effectively. Good storytelling always helps to build trust, whether that’s person to person, or business to business. How honest is your agency? Agency leaders make a lot of assumptions about their clients and prospects, and while many are spot-on, some result in a lack of focus on things that are really important to the people we serve. One of these showed up in our 2024 Agency Edge research, as we compared the extent to which clients value agencies today compared to the levels we saw in our research five years ago. It's the extent to which clients value agencies for providing an unbiased opinion about their marketing. This year, 56% of respondents strongly agreed with the statement "The most valuable part of working with an agency is getting their unbiased opinion about our marketing efforts." In 2019, 42% of respondents strongly agreed. That's a 14 percentage-point increase in five years — a statistically significant increase. You may assume that most prospects and clients believe that, because we sell marketing services, we're obviously going to pooh-pooh any efforts that aren't ours, and that as a result they can't really trust that we're unbiased. It's not true. The majority of clients STRONGLY agree that our unbiased perspective is one of our chief values. Are you hesitant to come out and tell your clients the truth, good or bad, about their efforts, those of their previous marketing agencies, or your own on their behalf? Don't be. It's one of the things they value most in us. Bring it.
