Why Should Cybersecurity Budgets be the First on the Chopping Board? A few weeks ago, I made a post about the very seasonal approach many corporations including many Fortune 500 companies adopt when it comes to cybersecurity. Should cybersecurity be cyclical or defensive? I asked. should cybersecurity budgets be given priority only on the heels of a security incident? Why are security budgets the first to hit the chopping board whenever organizations are defensive in their spending? Now, that recession looms, as evidenced in the recent market sell-offs and a weakening economy, we see many organizations already making significant adjustments to their cybersecurity budgets. Isn't this counter-productive? With rising geopolitical tensions in the middle-east, isn't it obvious that we are very likely to see more state sponsored cyberattacks? Considering this, wouldn't we rather be looking to bumping up our security budgets in order to boost manpower training, security tools acquision etc. to build our onganization's security posture and make us more resilient against nation-state sponsored attacks? Sadly, while innovations in Artificial Intelligence has empowered malicious actors to be more brutal and versatile in ways never before imagined, many organizations are still looking to trim the already too lean security budget, thus, inhibiting their security team's ability to leverage AI tools to match the versatility of threat actors. The reality is that malicious actors have access to the same training as security teams do and perhaps even more sophisticated tools and financing, which technically means they are already in the lead. Further trimming security budgets means nothing other than consolidating this lead. It's puzzling how organizations could be incredibly niggardly when it comes to funding cybersecurity budget lines, but thoughtlessly dole out huge sums in payments during ransomware attacks just to protect their reputation and facilitate business continuity. I think now is the time to change this approach. security is not a luxury that gets trimmed immediately recession looms. Like they say: "pay the cook or pay the doctor", I say, fund your security team or fund ransomware gangs. 🚨 Wavestone's 2024 cyber benchmark is out! 🚨 This year reveals slow progress in cyber maturity (not that surprising!). A few takeaways: 1️⃣ Overall Maturity: Large corporations achieved a #53% maturity score, up just #1% from 2023, indicating sluggish advancement. 2️⃣ Key Improvements: #CloudSecurity (up by 5%, showing significant efforts in this domain) and #DataSecurity (up by 4%, indeed we see more significant programs in this area). 3️⃣ Critical Weaknesses: #ThirdPartySecurity (stagnant at 48.9%, highlighting how complex it is...), and #IndustrialSystemsSecurity (39.9%, underscoring the need for better protection—less justifiable in my opinion! It needs to change fast). 4️⃣ Geopolitical Context: With the current worldwide situation and the upcoming #OlympicGames, businesses face a high level of threats. 5️⃣ Regulatory Impact: Never-ending, it keeps proliferating everywhere. Recent cyber incidents underscore the critical need for enhanced security protocols: • Salt Typhoon Espionage Campaign: A Chinese-linked group infiltrated major U.S. telecommunications companies, including AT&T and Verizon, compromising sensitive communications and accessing real-time data of high-profile individuals. • CrowdStrike Software Update Incident: In July 2024, a flawed update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike led to widespread system crashes, affecting millions of Windows machines globally and disrupting essential services. • Synnovis Ransomware Attack: The NHS laboratory services provider faced a ransomware attack costing £32.7 million, significantly surpassing its previous year’s profits and leading to the leakage of 400GB of sensitive patient data. • Evolve Bank Data Breach: A ransomware attack targeted Evolve Bank, compromising the personal information of over 7.6 million individuals and affecting numerous fintech companies reliant on its services.
