Hectic morning in Brussels at the Development formation of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council. I made a number of contributions focussing first & foremost on the importance of maintaining overseas development aid budgets especially in the face of huge cuts. Within this, I stressed the need to maintain support for maternal health programmes, particularly in sub Saharan Africa, as they increasingly become victims of a wider culture war. It is in the EU’s strategic interests to maintain development programmes in Africa, they allow the EU to target the problems Europe faces, at source.
