Deadline approaching - 1/15/25 - I'm reposting this to amplify an incredibly important issue that impacts our entire industry. When my meetings agency was 8(a) certified, I found it difficult to identify a NAICS code that accurately described what we do. This lack of an appropriate classification posed real challenges—everything from securing contracts to measuring the scope and impact of our industry. I wasn’t alone in this; it’s a systemic issue that has hindered the Live Events Industry for years. Thanks to Wendy Porter and the Live Events Coalition, there’s now a crucial initiative to address this exact problem. By pushing to modify the outdated NAICS codes, we are working to establish proper recognition for our industry within the federal system. This change is vital—not just for credibility—but because it directly affects access to resources, funding, and accurate representation of our scale and importance. I am calling on my network to join this effort by writing a letter in support of this change. IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED - Letters to Federal Government re modification of NAICS Codes (North American Industry Classification System) As many of you know, I've been involved in supporting the Live Events Industry thru the Live Events Coalition since March 2020. One of the issues we identified in our work was that we don't have a NAICS code for our industry. This is the federal code you use when filing a new business and when you do business tax returns. So, pulling data on how large we are, how many small businesses are involved, and the number of workers was extremely difficult. As such, that made our work that much harder when we were trying to substantiate WHO we are as an industry to get funding in place during the pandemic. (LEC research in 2020 indicated we are 12 million people, 2 million small businesses worth over $1 Trillion). When we polled members of LEC back in 2020, we got over 30 NAICS codes that were in play across the various business types in our ecosystem. Compare that to the Hospitality Industry... which has one code, 72. So they had a much easier time proving who they were, how much help they needed, and they got funding when we didn't. EDIT TO ADD: Funding was actually distributed by NAICS code at the time. NAICS CODE 72 got funding. The 30+ codes were are under did not. I've attached an infographic LEC did back 2021 in the comments that helps tell that story. Here's the challenge. The NAICS codes are only updated by the Federal Government every 5 years. If we don't get a proposal in for a modification to the codes by NEXT WEEK, we are out of luck for 5 more years. This is where you come in. I NEED YOUR HELP to write a letter in support of making this change to the NAICS codes. The more letters we have from business owners and workers in the industry, the better our chances are of getting this fixed and making us a recognized industry with the US Federal Government. We've tried to make it very easy for you to do. I did mine over the holidays, and it literally took me less than 5 minutes to do. The issue of SIC (Standard Industry Codes) not being fit for purpose to gather together data on the events industry is global. Wendy Porter, Live Events Coalition, Laura Palker and Exhibitions and Events Workforce Development Federation are building support in the US to get the NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) updated to better reflect the events industry. I am drawing this campaign to your attention as many of the associations and companies within my network will have a US presence, with their networks hopefully able to support directly (as business owners or workers in the US) or encourage support for their campaign. Time is short, with only a week to go! By getting the NAICS updated, it will also help the case for getting the overarching ISIC with the UN and the SIC in the UK updated too, which will help with the development and recognition of the events industry in the UK and globally. One of the leading peer studies for private foundations should be released soon. Each year, Council on Foundations teams up with Commonfund to produce the CCSF Study on Foundations; the 2023 version is expected to be dropped any day now. It’s historically been a terrific study with lots of insightful information and data, and Prime Buchholz’s private foundations team is eager to analyze the results. We are, however, cautious about relying on the data set as a comparative tool given its limited representation of the private foundation community. According to the IRS, there are more than 100,000 private foundations in the United States—and nearly 50,000 of those have assets greater than $1 million, according to FoundationIQ. The 2022 CCSF Study included just 171 private foundations. Peer comparison is a natural instinct and can be a helpful tool, but we caution against making bold assessments when making comparisons using a limited data set.
