Globally, 1 in every 10 people in the world lives in #extremepoverty. This is predicted to worsen with the #climatecrisis and global conflicts, pushing millions more into poverty. We need big investments to support multifaceted approaches that are evidence-backed and government-led to support millions of households across the world to lift themselves out of extreme poverty. In a world where #ClimateChange and global instability threaten to exacerbate #ExtremePoverty, efforts to overcome these challenges must be rooted in strong #evidence.    The Graduation approach is an evidence-backed #EconomicInclusion program that combines resource transfers, skills training & psychosocial support to equip vulnerable people with the #tools they need to create #sustainable pathways out of poverty.    As a result of rigorous evaluations that show the program creates lasting economic impacts, 15 governments and counting have adopted the approach, including in #India and the #Phillipines. Extreme poverty is a multifaceted challenge, but it is not insurmountable. The #GraduationApproach, developed by BRAC in 2002, has demonstrated that with a "big push" investment, people can escape the poverty trap and build sustainable livelihoods. This model has been rigorously tested and proven to work across diverse regions, making it one of the most effective poverty reduction strategies. We must support #governments in adopting and scaling these proven approaches. We know what works – now it’s time to take action. It’s Poverty Awareness Month! With nearly a decade of research and practice in community development and poverty alleviation, one truth has remained clear to me: poverty is deeply intergenerational. In the U.S., poverty is often described as a “WICKED PROBLEM” it's so complex that it defies simple solutions. In Nigeria, we say “POVERTY IS SPIRITUAL”. 😃 I've seen different manifestations of poverty in South Africa, America and Nigeria and regardless of how it’s framed in the different contexts, poverty knows no borders, gender, or race. My work in places like Makoko—the world’s largest floating slum in Lagos—and Camden, New Jersey, shows that POVERTY IS TREATABLE. Solutions, however, cannot be solely driven by donor organizations, non-profits or even governments, they will fail. Real, lasting impact comes from community-led and community-owned initiatives. The image below has been my driving force for developing sustainable solutions for communities. With the right tools, collaboration, and community ownership, we can disrupt this cycle. I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of empowering people to shape their futures. As we observe Poverty Awareness Month, let’s commit to fostering self-help, participatory and community-driven solutions that build pathways for individuals and communities to thrive. Eradicating extreme poverty for all people everywhere by 2030 is a pivotal goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Extreme poverty, defined as surviving on less than $2.15 per person per day at 2017 purchasing power parity, has witnessed remarkable declines over recent decades. However, the emergence of COVID-19 marked a turning point, reversing these gains as the number of individuals living in extreme poverty increased for the first time in a generation by almost 90 million over previous predictions. Even prior to the pandemic, the momentum of poverty reduction was slowing down. By the end of 2022, nowcasting suggested that 8.4 per cent of the world’s population, or as many as 670 million people, could still be living in extreme poverty. This setback effectively erased approximately three years of progress in poverty alleviation. If current patterns persist, an estimated 7% of the global population – around 575 million people – could still find themselves trapped in extreme poverty by 2030, with a significant concentration in sub-Saharan Africa. A shocking revelation is the resurgence of hunger levels to those last observed in 2005. Equally concerning is the persistent increase in food prices across a larger number of countries compared to the period from 2015 to 2019. This dual challenge of poverty and food security poses a critical global concern.

💡Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In #SouthAfrica, the extension of the EU-AFD research facility on #inequalities seeks to address poverty reduction in partnership with South African researchers. ❓In particular, the partnership asks: can the Social Relief Distress (SRD) grant introduced during Covid-19 be redesigned to maximise the impact of the reduction of #poverty and unemployment, while still being sustainable in the long term? Research results show that SRD was an excellent investment of government spending because it reduces poverty – including food poverty – and can increase job prospects. Without the SRD grant, 26% of the South African population lives below the 2024 food poverty line, with insufficient income to buy a basic basket of food items necessary for survival. Research estimates that the current SRD reduces this number by at least 3.8 million people. This is a roughly 24% reduction in the incidence of extreme poverty. Further, we estimate that the current SRD could lead to a 48% reduction in extreme poverty. #Extremepoverty is a moving target. Changes in global value chains, local economic conditions and health and climate shocks can push back households for years. For last one decade I have been working closely with one of the largest extreme poverty programmes in Bangladesh to address the issues of multidimensional poverty. Over the years we have adapted many different innovations which includes regional specific targeting of beneficiaries, classification of beneficiaries based on resources, human, social, natural, physical, financial capital, differentiated interventions based on beneficiary capacity, support on range of IGAs based on local climate conditions and market opportunities. Over time the programme evolved as a systemic market systems development programme that connected households to private sector and local market actors and the government's extension and social safety net programmes and the market actors to the households for more sustained pathway out of poverty. We also explained how micro-credit can be used as a core approach for extreme poverty alleviation. It was a pleasure to present the work as a keynote in presence of some of the most eminent economists and development professionals of the country.
