I had an amazing experience at #UntappedPotential powered by Selections Career Support Services! So much valuable learning and knowledge-sharing. A pleasant surprise came when I reconnected with an old friend from my in-house days at Rona — Andrew. It’s been over 6 years since we worked together, but the impact he made on me, and the entire team, has truly stayed with me. We hired Andrew as a loader back when the store was still Lowe’s, and he absolutely thrived. Andrew has different learning needs and required some initial support to get started, but once through the onboarding process, he flourished. He didn’t just meet expectations—he exceeded them, helping to transform the store’s culture for the better. I hesitate to say “we gave him the opportunity” because Andrew took the opportunity and ran with it. His success is entirely his own, and I’m just honored to have been part of his journey. So why bring this up? Fast forward 6 years and there was Andrew, on stage at the Untapped Potential conference, demonstrating the challenges of interviews for those who process information differently. I couldn’t be prouder of my former colleague. Day 3 of our paid work experience with UK Youth: Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Dom and Zak from Bullhorn, who shared their journeys from childhood to sales management 👏. Our participants were engaged, asking loads of questions and showing great interest 🤔💬. Dom and Zak also discussed early talent opportunities at Bullhorn and what they look for in new hires 🎓. They encouraged everyone to connect with them on LinkedIn and promised to share upcoming job opportunities 💼. A great question was raised about diversity at Bullhorn, and Dom and Zak’s response was inspiring. As a London-based company 🌍, they’re committed to ensuring their workforce reflects the city’s diversity 🌈, with employees growing from entry-level roles to leadership 🚀. It’s a commitment to diversity that, unfortunately, many other organisations can’t match. ⭐️Journey of Resilience and New Beginnings⭐️ It’s been a challenging few weeks since the unfortunate closure of Obicà St Paul due to unforeseen property-related issues. Despite the team's hard work and dedication, external circumstances beyond our control led to the closure, and ultimately, redundancy. Saying goodbye to a place I had poured so much into was a hard pill to swallow, but I’m embracing the journey ahead, even with all its ups and downs. I’ve been deeply touched by the many customers who reached out to express how much they will miss us. Their kind words and appreciation have been a reminder of the relationships we built and the exceptional service we were able to deliver together. To everyone who took the time to share their gratitude, thank you—it means the world. Looking back on my time at Obicà, I’m incredibly proud of the team I had the privilege to lead. We created a culture of excellence, and together we achieved remarkable results in customer service and team growth. Watching my team flourish and seeing our regulars return week after week is something I will always cherish. Since the closure, I’ve been actively searching for my next opportunity, specifically as General Manager. The job hunt has been a mix of emotions—sending out countless CVs, receiving a handful of replies, and experiencing the frustration of rejections without feedback. It’s not easy, but it’s all part of the process, and I’m more determined than ever to find a place that truly values good people culture, offers a healthy work-life balance, and provides real opportunities for growth. What I will bring to my next role is a blend of extensive leadership experience, a genuine passion for delivering outstanding customer experiences, and a proven track record of driving operational success. As I continue my search, I’ve found myself wondering: how long should one typically expect to wait after an interview or submitting an application? It can feel like an eternity at times, and understanding the usual timelines would really help manage expectations. Any advice or insights from those in the recruitment world would be greatly appreciated! If anyone knows of any opportunities or has advice to share, I’d be truly grateful. Three years ago I made a big career shift and Freeman+Leonard took a chance on me. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and the team I get to work with and learn from every day. Making the move from being a creative to a creative and marketing recruiter has been both rewarding and stretching. In this role I have been able to lean into my strengths (StrengthsFinder: Belief, Connectedness, Communication, Development and Responsibility) and leverage them in new and powerful ways. This has helped me grow as a person and recruiter, allowed me to bring value to the team and ultimately enabled me to partner with incredible talent to grow in their careers. As with everything, it has not been smooth sailing, and I've learned a lot about myself and the industry. My top three takeaways over the past 3 years are: Be KIND. Kindness can go a long way. This was true during my creative days, but even more so when dealing with emotional situations like job loss or job rejection. A little empathy, listening ear and kindness can really turn someone's day around. You never know what is happening on the other end of the phone or email, use every opportunity to remember people are human and treat them as such. It’s HARD. Finding the right person, at the right time for the right job is SO much harder than I realized when I was on the client side. Changing jobs won’t eliminate challenges, obstacles or difficulties BUT when you’re in your element, solving those problems becomes almost second nature. Create an environment that fosters trust and where your team is able to take risks, fail, learn and grow. CREATIVITY and innovation aren’t just for creatives. I was a little worried about losing my creative side by taking this opportunity. However, I’ve actually used so much creativity in recruiting, it's just channeled in different ways. Finding new ways to use your strengths actually makes them better because it requires growth. Here's to another year of connecting people & careers! One year ago, my incredible business partner & friend took a leap that changed her life and URD forever. After 17 years in the corporate world, Meg left behind the security of her career to join URD full-time. To say I’m proud of her is an understatement. While our paths to URD full time were different, Meg’s was a long road of soul searching & careful consideration. She faced every doubt & challenge on her own, ensuring the choice was hers alone. That choice, while tough at times on her, and us, has been the most admirable one I witnessed. Reflecting on this last year, the growth we’ve experienced is thanks to the steady methodical way Meg operates. Her focused energy has been a game-changer, helping us grow in ways I couldn’t achieve alone. While my creative wheels spin fast, Meg keeps us moving forward with precision. She gets us from point A to point B without (Kristin) detours! Her knack for follow-through, relationship-building, and putting systems in place has been a cornerstone of our success. While my creative brain roams, Meg is the task-checker, the system-builder, and the organized force that keeps us on track. And somehow, she does all this while being a rockstar wife and mom to 3 incredible kids. Being a witness to Meg’s strength & having her fully on board, makes me even more excited about the future of this brand. Meg’s story is hers to tell, and I admire her quiet strength. She does not put it all out there as easily as I do, but I can tell you there is a powerful lesson in her journey. We hope it inspires anyone feeling stuck to take their own leap.
