If one focuses only on what's known in one's field, then the next experiments are likely underway. What is novel is if one imports an idea from another field that others had not thought about. Top things to learn from Robert Weinberg on The Night Science Podcast Apple: https://lnkd.in/eiFjBdEV Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eB3qhDMq -Respond opportunistically to what is happening around you in terms of coming up with new projects. -Allow yourself to continually revise your project despite what you said you would do. -Stay in touch by talking with colleagues to learn what they are prioritizing as important problems. -An idea untested is a house of cards. -Expose yourself to many things to avoid becoming a 'fachidiot' - an expert in a very narrow area. -When collecting data, have at least a pretense of what you might find there. -A group/lab should have critical mass: enough people that can constantly and continually be feeding each other with interesting ideas. -Training in the lab is affected by the number of people in the lab. -You should be able to justify robustly what it is that you intend to do.
