KEEPING IT REEL: CINEMA TERRORISM AND GETTING TOUGH ON DOMESTIC ABNZERS https://lnkd.in/gNAxfTWr <a href=""> - Published on 21 August, 2024 | Michael Swanick Summer is meant to be good for the spirit. Even for those used to the unpredictable nature of Auckland weather, time spent with one’s family away from the office and taking advantage of what sunshine there is has its benefits. It has, however, been impossible to escape another kind of cloud on the horizon. The season’s cinema releases, for instance, have included ‘It Ends With Us’, based on a best-selling book with the same title featuring domestic abuse (https://lnkd.in/gbrwF_Qu). Abuse was also one of the most compelling elements of new data published by the Ministry of Justice and analysed comprehensively by my colleague Savannah Davies (https://lnkd.in/g_ATxT_Y). In an article on this ‘blog only a few weeks ago, she explained that the figures showed a near 47 per cent increase in the number of domestic abuse-related orders made by family courts across the country since 2013 (https://lnkd.in/gRYBJRd4). Her observations have now been followed by media coverage outlining how the new Labour Government is planning to elevate the seriousness with which domestic abuse is treated. Various outlets, such as the Sunday Times, have described how police will be “asked to use counterterrorism-style tactics” to tackle with abusers. The exercise will be led by Home Officer minister Jess Phillips and will begin, says the Sunday Times, “with a six-month data-gathering exercise to assess the scale of the problem”. Yet it is regarded as being spearheaded by the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who is said to consider this “a massive priority”. Even before the weekend’s reports, that much was already clear from Labour’s decision to include specific reference to domestic abuse in its pre-election manifesto (https://lnkd.in/gVdAfNPd). It is also a similarly severe approach to that proposed in a policy paper unveiled by one Scottish MP back in March (https://lnkd.in/gZjbV22H). In my opinion, it is only right that efforts to eradicate the problem are intensified by all who can possibly make a difference. As Savannah pointed out, progress has been made but there is still much to do. That much has been made painfully clear by those recent MoJ statistics indicating the extent to which domestic abuse against women, men and children is a feature of matters handled by family lawyers like ourselves and family courts. I am deeply concerned about the January 18, 2025 event in Canada, initially set for Mississauga and hosted by Hizb ut-Tahrir, a designated terrorist organization. This event promotes terrorism and hate, violating Canadian values and law, and must not proceed. Hizb ut-Tahrir seeks to establish a caliphate, advocating for “regime change” through extremist ideologies linked to violence and terrorism. Founded in 1953 as a radical offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, it has a history of failed coups, calls for violence, and connections to various terrorist acts. Despite being banned in over a dozen countries, including the UK, Hizb operates freely in Canada, threatening our democratic principles and public safety. I urge the following actions: 1. Prohibit the use of venues for this event in Mississauga and other cities. 2. Investigate Hizb's activities and consider designating it a terrorist organization under Canadian law. 3. Ensure law enforcement monitors potential security threats from this gathering. This event requires immediate attention; extremist activities must not be tolerated in Canada.

Earlier this week, I spoke to Sky News in the run-up to Axel Rudakubaba's sentancing for the horrific attack that sparked days of violent unrest across the UK. The sentencing hearing today and the aftermath of the case will be a significant inflection point in the UK's counter-terrorism strategy. Though it was set up to counter explicitly and rigidly ideological radicalisation, online, we have seen the iterative fragmentation of those ideologies into aesthetics, fan-communities, and participatory groups. The emphasis, and indeed the risk, of these groups is in the collapse of distinction between participating online via consumption and/or production and sharing of materials and participation offline via a mass-casualty attack. Axel Rudakubana was referred to Prevent three times and, given Prevent's focus on ideology, rightly not adopted by the program. However, with no robust mental health or wider peripheral support for behaviours like his, he simply slipped through the cracks. This case raises significant questions about what we consider terrorism. Can self-radicalisation to violence for violence's sake be considered terrorism? Is it terrorism when a political aim is removed? How can we equip Prevent and other staff at the front-line of counter terror to deal with fragmented self-initiated radicalisation? I believe this is where a renewed emphasis on the effects of media can be of huge value. For a generation that has grown up not knowing a true online/offline distinction, we need to ask how that lack impacts the consumption of extremely violent materials, and how a medium that priviliges participation can lead youths to extreme, violent nihilism at a time in their lives when they are seeking an identity. https://lnkd.in/ezTBysxp

A Critical Step in National and Global Security: Trump’s Executive Order Against Criminal Organizations As a NYPD Police Officer, federal special agent, and security operations and management expert, I have spent decades combating crime and ensuring public safety. I fully support President Donald Trump’s executive order designating several dangerous organizations—including drug cartels, Tren de Aragua (TdA), and MS-13—as global terrorist threats. This move is long overdue and is a crucial step in addressing the growing influence of transnational criminal organizations, which are not just a regional threat but a global security crisis impacting the United States, Canada, and Europe. These groups do far more than drug trafficking—they are deeply involved in money laundering, human trafficking, extortion, kidnappings, and brutal acts of violence that destabilize governments and threaten national security. The Tren de Aragua, with its roots in Venezuela, and MS-13, which operates across El Salvador and the U.S., have expanded their operations globally, making alliances with terrorist groups and undermining the rule of law. In my career, I have seen firsthand how these criminal networks corrupt institutions, terrorize communities, and contribute to the mass displacement of people seeking safety. In Mexico, Venezuela, El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti, these groups exploit poverty, weak governance, and corruption to seize power, creating failed states where violence reigns and legitimate governments struggle to respond. The strategic partnerships between drug cartels and terrorist organizations, such as ISIS, Hezbollah, and Iran’s Quds Force, cannot be ignored. Intelligence operations have revealed their cooperation in drug and arms trafficking, financing terrorism, and even providing logistical support to extremist groups. This is no longer just a law enforcement issue—it is a national security emergency that demands a coordinated global response. This executive order is a significant step forward, but it must be reinforced with international cooperation, intelligence sharing, and aggressive action to disrupt their networks and dismantle their power structures. We live in DANGEROUS TIMES—now is the time to act decisively to secure our borders, protect our citizens, and eliminate these threats before they grow even stronger. Could calling attacks like Southport 'terrorism' help to prevent them? https://lnkd.in/eAX3JAgM The individual committed the crime. Yes, there seemingly were failures at lots of levels to 'intervene' but ultimately it was his hands that planned and did such heinous acts. And we are starting to build up a picture of this 'person' and his background, that is relevant to the question of why: serious behavioural / psychiatric disorder (even now, some have seemingly tried to downplay this vital component for some bizzare reasons), a history of aggression and violence starting an early age, online accessing of horrendous violence to feed an obsession (and it was an obsession), access to and willingness to carry and use weapons (and no, Amazon aren't to blame for this given most domestic kitchens have knives) and an increasingly important issue: misogyny - a hatred of girls and women, hence his vulnerable 'targets'. Another angle that has not been yet discussed is his lack of empathy, something one of the defence lawyers also commented on (an apparent complete lack of empathy). Simon Baron-Cohen wrote a book called Zero degrees of empathy: https://lnkd.in/exYmwDUD This is more than relevant to this horrendous crime and the fact that he'd apparently produced enough ricin to kill 12,000 people https://lnkd.in/e8qGRY7i and no doubt will be explored further (where and how did he get the raw ingredients for making ricin, who paid for them?) And armed with all that information, we really should start looking with more details around the question of whether there are others like this, and what Governments can do to stop and prevent them from committing such heinous acts.

A Manufactured #Crisis & Convenient Calculated Distraction Let’s not mince words. Politicians love a good crisis. It’s the one time they can look decisive while doing the bare minimum. This isn’t about #protecting anyone—it’s about protecting their jobs, their image & their party lines. Who’s being held accountable for the conditions that allow 7,500 arson cases in the last 2 years? Oh right, no one. But we sure can pump millions into new counter-terrorism squads instead of, you know, fixing the systemic issues fueling the flames. When Aboriginal cultural sites are vandalized or attacked, where’s the national outcry? Shifting the narrative away from failures & consolidate more power under the guise of “protection?” Arson without the terrorism label, it’s just another tragic insurance claim. Suddenly this one is unique? Businesses, homes & lives have been targeted—Churches, Mosques, Tobacconists, tattoo parlors, clubs. Did those arsonists just forget to write a manifesto, so their crimes don’t count as terrorism? Only real difference here is timing & optics. Arson The Poor Man’s Terrorism - Ultimate PR Stunt Ever notice how calling something "terrorism" instantly upgrades it from a local crime to a #national priority? It's like a crime on steroids. Where’s the line between a lone psycho with a matchbox & a coordinated act of terror? The line is wherever the government decides it should be—for maximum political leverage. #Terrorism narrative fuels public fear, which is a powerful tool that makes people distrust each other instead of the government. Fear makes people accept authoritarian measures they’d otherwise reject. Fear makes people forget why they were angry in the first place. Governments don’t just run on fear—they profit from it. Fear is the political equivalent of a subscription model: keeps the populace renewing their faith in authority, handing over #liberties for the illusion of safety. It’s like a timeshare, except you never even get the beachfront condo. The Real Threat- Politicians Clinging to Power. Expanded police powers, surveillance, & federal overreach. Convenient, right? Because nothing says “we care about your safety” like increasing state control. These powers always stick around, ready to be used (or misused) in ways far beyond the original “emergency.” After 9/11, anti-terror laws were sold as “temporary.” Two decades later, they’ve morphed into tools for #targeting dissent, journalists, & marginalized communities. continued in comments 👇👇👇 Mark Sweeney Marie J. Morning folks, In the wake of the riots of recent weeks in England and Northern Ireland, and lone wolf attacks in Turkey, Galway and New York City I was pleased to be able to assist Martyn McLaughlin of The Scotsman in drawing out my thoughts on what lies behind these events. In this article I reflect on my own experience policing public order breakdown but alongside this "at a time when the country is fractured, 'bad actors' (are) seeking to exploit division, a theme I explore in my new book, Terror for Profit, which dissects the relationship between terrorism and organised crime." The article considers the role of the police in community cohesion, and the need for a return to a position of neutrality in the culture wars, which the recent riots evidence have turned from 'cold' to 'hot'. I also give due consideration to Scotland's situation in amongst all of these matters, and particularly our relationship to events in Northern Ireland. I also discussed the role mental health plays in contemporary terrorism, and the need for greater understanding of the 'why' of attacks. 'Profit' is not just about finance, and reaches far further than bank balances, as I explain in detail in my book (see comments). I hope the article is an informative read. #terrorism #organisedcrime #organizedcrime #publicorder #riots #mentalhealth #scotland #northernireland #terrorforprofit #terrorforprofitbook #turkey #ireland #newyorkcity https://lnkd.in/euqc2rmi
