My latest #PolicyWatch in Green Building Advisor:
Last May, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued Order No. 1920, which in very broad terms requires the country's electricity transmission providers to implement long-term planning in anticipation of next-generation (i.e., renewable) energy systems. ⚡⚡⚡
Given the current state of the U.S. grid, much of which is flirting with obsolescence, this ruling holds great promise for many parts of the country to benefit from the following:
🍃 Cleaner energy being produced and transmitted by more efficient means
💸 Interstate commerce through the trading and selling of power across state lines, via high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines
💡 Improved reliability by hardening and upgrading local distribution lines, commonly referred to as "the last mile"
Ideally, greater capacity to move electricity longer distances equals greater incentive to develop more renewable energy. The cost-benefit ratio is plain as day. Add to which, corporations operating in the smart grid tech space (e.g., smart metering, smart substations, battery storage, and more) are claiming an increasing share of the energy market, well in excess of $100 billion.
Despite the promise of FERC's new rule, there are many who fear that in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning the so-called Chevron doctrine, Order No. 1920 will be legally challenged in the courts by energy service companies who don't like the idea of making long-term investments. Only time will tell.
