Ugh. AT&T has data breach exposing data on almost ALL of its customers, including who called and texted who (CDRs) They "think" no one has used it "so far". Well, they will. This is insanely valuable data to scammers: if you know X knows Y, just call X, clone their voice from their voicemail greeting, and now call Y pretending to be X. I have told people for years - you should consider every plain SMS message you send to be stored in various databases forever. I encourage family, friends, journalists, lawyers, and professionals of all stripes to use secure messaging apps -- Signal being the gold standard -- as their default for all communication. Enterprises, too, should be finding ways to rely on end-to-end encrypted services wherever feasible for their data. This isn't just specifically AT&T customers, but also other carriers who rely on AT&T networks. Additionally, this information includes "calling and texting records that an AT&T phone number interacted with during the six-month period". So if you had interactions with anyone on AT&T during that time period your metadata may also be included! On a different note, very interesting to read the 8-K report stating that the justice department actually supported delaying disclosing the breach.
