Jakob Nielson and UX has been such a big part of my career and way I work, so I love sharing this synopsis of UX. The article sums it up perfectly: "𝘜𝘟 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯, 𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 “𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵” 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵." 💡 For as long as I've been in digital (awhile now), it’s a little crazy how so many companies and orgs just can't get this right. So many times, it’s what the business wants and what they're selling instead of taking the time to ask customers: '𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵,' '𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴,' ‘𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶?’ Let's be honest even if you're given the time to do UX, it’s most likely not done as rigorously as it should, and teams are asked to turn around something (usually wireframes) in days i͟n͟s͟t͟e͟a͟d͟ of doing the research, collecting the data, and designing the right thing for the customer. And that's even if we Know who the 'right customers' are we're designing for. Instead, teams hustle and push something out quickly and most of the times subpar. Those types of projects don't have the impact, or the revenue driving ability they could have--worse yet we may be losing customers and risking bigger metrics like 𝗟𝗧𝗩, 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲💲 I came into UX and Product to build really great things for customers. At Albertsons I wanted to evolve the way people hunted & gathered food with online shopping-during COVID we certainly did! UX and research are beautiful things if teams are given the time and headspace to do them. It’s a field full of science, data, psychology design: a true mix of the arts and sciences. Retail and tech are transforming, companies don’t have the luxury of not thinking and understanding their customers for much longer, because customers are driving the fall or rise of companies now more than ever. I’m excited (and a bit scared) of where we’re going, but fields like UX give us much more insight and knowledge of where we should be going. #ux #uxresearch #usercentered #usercentereddesign #uxuxi #productdesign #ecommerce #retail #digital #ecommerce #technology #bestpractices #lessonslearned #customerfirst #customercentric #knowledge #insight #datadriven #research Jakob Nielsen #jakobnielson

Psychology is an integral part of UX/UI design that often goes unnoticed—but it's what truly makes a design intuitive. How we process information, our cognitive biases, and even how we react to color and spacing all influence the user experience—and the actions we aim to encourage from our users. By understanding how users think and behave, we can create designs that feel effortless. It’s not just about making things “look good,” but ensuring they work for the person interacting with them. That’s why I’ve been diving deeper into concepts like cognitive load, visual hierarchy, and user motivation to enhance the experiences I design. These UX laws and user-centered design, are a great reminder that designing with the user at the heart of the process isn’t just a best practice—it’s essential. Good design starts with empathy and understanding, and that's where psychology really becomes powerful. #UXDesign #UserExperience #UserPsychology #CenteredDesign #UXLaws

To all my critics, this is from one of the godfathers of UX. If you won't take my word or experience for it, you cannot deny Jakob's. The highlights: 1) 'a scientific approach to design' UX is and will always be the scientific practice within Product. This is why I am such an advocate for scientific design. It works!! 2) 'observing real humans while they use our design' This is the UX Psychology component of UX. Understanding behaviour to inform design, in a scientific manner. Call it Design Psychology or Design Research if it's sexier and more appealing to you. 3) 'consists of process & result' The process is User Centric Design and it delivers the results you want. Everything else doesn't. 4) 'applies to everything, software to toothbrushes' Your UX lens is not just online. Your UX lens is through the line - on and offline, i.e. ubiquitous. Stop limiting your learning and open up to real UX. This stuff is not open to debate. If you want to succeed, this is the way. Everything else either doesn't work, or comes at great risk and stress. There are too many people, the majority, telling me and you that this stuff isn't true or valid. They have limited experience and do not know real UX because they weren't there. Jakob was. I was. Listen to the people who have the actual experience of real, user centric UX and you will grow and succeed. Continue to listen to the charlatans and blaggers and you'll join the ranks of the permanently self and over-defensive, defending wrong en masse. We know how to build great products. Stop reinventing the wheel and start standing on our shoulders to go further. You're all so far behind the curve because you've been listening to people guessing and reinventing the wheel as a square. Defect. Think for yourself. Join the UCD army - our numbers are growing, the current raft of blaggers have dug themselves in deeply enough and now is the time to show the world what good looks like....how to build profitable, desirable, likeable, usable products that sell. Old school cool baby!!

Excellent summary—this list is the essence of UX that everyone needs to know, especially early-stage startup founders, product managers, and engineers. UX is not about making things look pretty. "UX must simplify technology." How true! UX is way more than UI design—it would take much more than a standard design system and some Figma mocks to deliver good UX. #userexperience #UXdesign
