Something I'm proud of for the end of the week. Working with Sehar Manji and team on this testimonial. Our team was tasked with re-evaluating our PMF - and how our end user impacts their company. And here is a result of that: This case study is highlighting the VOC, power of the product, power of a successful onboarding by our CX team, power of our support team, and power of enabling our customers to have time to do their best work. At the end of the day its not what your customer can do for you, but what you can do for your customers. A highlight: “We’re doing so much more evaluation work and in one platform – evaluations that used to take a week or two. Now we can knock it out in a day or two, it’s huge!” For any type of technology, enhancing your customers workflow from a week to a day or two - that's a win for everyone. And that comes from one thing: enabling our customers. Giving them the power to do their job well. You have to continuously remind yourself, customers first. They are the champions of your brand. Oil & gas investments take place under irreducible uncertainty, and millions of dollars are spent to constrain the range of that uncertainty. Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic technology is one of the latest iterations of the technology that has unlocked billions of barrels of resources offshore since the first streamers were towed for a 2D line. A SPE paper I just ran across, SPE-218639-MS, has it all - an underperforming multi-billion dollar investment, a potential proprietary OBN survey, a Value of Information (VOI) analysis to decide if the shoot would be economic, and tons of geoscience (you had me at full wave inversion!). This resulted in significant changes to the geomodel of the reservoir, new well paths and take points and a reported after action review that put the return on the OBN investment at 4X and growing over time. Consulting other data sources and inferring timelines, it looks like ~100% increase in production with new drills after the OBN data was integrated into the reservoir management plan. What kind of value can be unlocked by OBN around existing infrastructure with potentially prospective Miocene sands shrouded by complex salt structures? Historically, it has been the majors and large independents that have made these kind of investments but with the bigs focused on the Lower Tertiary, now it seems the opportunity to harvest 'big alpha' in the sub-salt Miocene lies with smaller companies with the nerve and wit to lean forward and take it. #ThermalThursdays This week we have seen major announcements coming from Fervo and FORGE, showing sustained flowrates from their respective enhanced geothermal wells. CEO of ResFrac, Mark McClure, had a follow up blog post discussing the importance of these results and the validation they bring to multistage, horizontal EGS well development. There’s an important point that flew under the radar that I need to highlight. As Mark suggested, the largest risk now to EGS is thermal degradation of the resource. It’s important to realize how serious this point could be. The heat in place is fundamentally the total heat that can be extracted from any given volume. How that heat comes out is a function of both the well design and what I would argue is more important, the resource and reservoir (i.e., the rock). Looking at the chart above (from Beardsmore and Cull, 2001), thermal conductivity (and other thermal properties) vary by rock type. That’s an obvious statement. Because thermal properties vary by rock type, the ability and rate at which heat will be extracted will vary, and this often then varies by play. This means the results outside Milford, UT, will look different than the results we would expect at Los Alamos and Fenton Hill if we were to restart that EGS with new drilling technology, or at Newberry Volcano, or in any major sedimentary basin. This will impact spacing, number of stages, well choke and/or pump rates – basically, the rock and the resource extraction will dictate reservoir management. These results emphasize ever more the need for high resolution subsurface understanding prior to drilling complete, full cost, production and injection wells. A quality subsurface assessment in upstream oil and gas includes understanding where interpretations are supported by evidence and where they are based on assumptions. You can’t walk around an oil or gas reservoir taking direct measurements wherever you want.
