⏩️ excellent review! maybe we need to reneame it “from raw data to evidence (#RWE)” in our ecosystem? 🔂 maybe we need to revisit the value of such data for public health in light of financial implications described in other settings? 🆓 nothing is for free but maybe better utilizing the abundance of already available data could dramatically reduce costs - rendering healthcare delivery as well as R&D much more efficient! 🔀 Full disclosure: no affiliation!

Third Wave of Open Data I just discovered GovLab's 2020 report on the Third Wave of Open Data last night [1] (also the figure below from the report). Though it's been a few years, its insights about the evolution of open data are fascinating. But why "third" wave? The first wave started with the Freedom of Information Act, where users could "request" data. The second wave was initiated by the Open Government Initiative, making data "available" by default. Now we're entering the third wave, where the focus shifts to real impact and use cases, with data being shared on a purpose-driven basis. The power of open data is immense, yet underutilized. I feel this deeply after working in the healthcare industry for many years. The essence of US healthcare lies in the collaboration between public and private sectors, with data serving as the connector between these two worlds. As we stand at the emergence of this third wave, I'm excited to see how open data can bring greater clarity, enable evidence-based policy making, and increase transparency in private sectors.
