#SDWAN #NetworkOptimization #CloudNetworking #ITInfrastructure #Telecom #WAN An SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) is designed with a layered approach, often referred to as planes. Each plane has a specific function and offers advantages in managing and optimizing WAN connections. The key SD-WAN components: 1. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞: The data plane handles the actual traffic forwarding across the various WAN links (MPLS, broadband internet, etc.). It performs functions like encryption, packet inspection, and traffic shaping. 2. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞: The control plane determines how traffic is routed across the available WAN links. It uses intelligence and application-awareness to choose the optimal path based on factors like cost, performance, and security. 3. 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞: The management plane provides a centralized interface for configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting the entire SD-WAN network. It allows administrators to manage devices, policies, and get insights into network performance. 4. 𝐎𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞: Present in some SD-WAN solutions, the orchestration plane automates tasks like deploying new sites, provisioning devices, and managing configurations across the network. It simplifies large-scale deployments and ongoing maintenance. 𝐯𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐯𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝, 𝐯𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞 are all components of Cisco's SD-WAN solution. Their individual functions: 1. 𝐯𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞: vManage acts as the centralized management system for the entire SD-WAN network. This is control panel for SD-WAN. Provides a graphical interface to configure devices, policies, and settings. Monitors network health and performance. Offers troubleshooting tools and reports. 2. 𝐯𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐝: vBond acts as the orchestrator and gatekeeper for the SD-WAN fabric. This is security checkpoint and traffic manager for devices joining the network. Validates new vEdge devices trying to join the network. Establishes initial secure connections between vEdges and vSmart controllers. Manages the overall network topology and device connectivity. 3. 𝐯𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭: vSmart is the intelligence center of the SD-WAN network. This is the brain that controls and optimizes data flow. Runs control plane protocols like OMP (Overlay Management Protocol) to manage routing and policy configuration. Decides how traffic flows across the WAN links based on defined policies and application requirements. Shares data plane keys with vEdges to establish secure tunnels for encrypted communication. 4. 𝐯𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞: vEdge devices are the physical or virtual customer premises equipment (CPE) deployed at branch locations. These are intelligent routers at your branch offices. Connects to various WAN links (MPLS, internet, etc.). Implements routing protocols based on vSmart configurations. Applies traffic shaping and security policies defined in vManage. Encrypts and decrypts data traffic flowing across the WAN.

# Achieving Sub-Second Resolution in Network Packet Capture: Benefits and Challenges Network professionals often need to analyze packet captures with extreme precision to troubleshoot performance issues, optimize applications, or investigate security incidents. However, traditional packet capture methods may not provide the level of granularity required for today's high-speed networks. This post explores the world of sub-second resolution in network packet capture, focusing on nanosecond timestamps and their implications. ## The Problem As network speeds increase and applications become more latency-sensitive, the need for highly accurate packet timing information grows. Standard packet capture tools often provide microsecond resolution, which may not be sufficient for analyzing performance in environments like high-frequency trading or troubleshooting issues on 10Gbps+ networks. ## Benefits of Nanosecond Resolution 1. **Improved Accuracy**: Nanosecond timestamps offer 1000 times more precision than microsecond timestamps, allowing for more detailed analysis of packet timing and network behavior. 2. **Better Microbursts Detection**: High-resolution timestamps enable the identification of short-lived traffic spikes that might be missed with lower resolution captures. 3. **Enhanced Latency Analysis**: For latency-sensitive applications, nanosecond resolution can reveal subtle timing issues that would be invisible at lower resolutions. 4. **More Precise Troubleshooting**: When investigating network issues, higher resolution data can help pinpoint problems more accurately, potentially reducing mean time to resolution (MTTR). ## Options and Considerations 1. **Hardware-based Timestamping**: - Devices like Netscout's InfiniStream appliances or Gigamon's visibility fabric nodes offer hardware-based nanosecond timestamping. - Benefits: Highly accurate, consistent across different interface types. - Considerations: Can be expensive, may require specialized hardware. 2. **Software-based Solutions**: - Tools like Wireshark and tcpdump can support nanosecond resolution when used with appropriate hardware and software configurations. - Benefits: More accessible, can work with existing hardware in some cases. - Considerations: Accuracy may vary depending on system capabilities and load. 3. **Network TAPs vs. SPAN Ports**: - Network TAPs generally introduce less latency and provide more accurate timestamps compared to SPAN ports. - Benefits of TAPs: Lower latency, more precise timing information. - Considerations: May require additional hardware and network changes. 4. **Buffer Tuning and Optimization**: - Properly configuring network device buffers can help prevent packet drops and improve timestamp accuracy. - Benefits: Can improve performance without hardware upgrades. - Considerations: Requires careful tuning and monitoring to avoid unintended consequences. #pcap #wireshark #netscout #riverbed #gigamon

I've been hearing from a ton of businesses today who are impacted by the recent Tropical Storms - but not just directly....indirectly. Thousands of businesses are without internet as their ISPs Data Centers are down. Turn on the backup cable connection right? they were impacted too.... what can you do if your primary and secondary ISPs are down?! Consider an Enterprise tri-Cellular Wireless Solution. Why Lumen Technologies? * 3 wireless carriers (ATT, TMO, VZW) on one bill * Smart device that auto-toggles between carriers with no manual intervention needed * Unlimited Service - no overage concerns! * We can install and compliment your existing network. We do a thorough SOW to ensure equipment is placed in an ideal location and can order UPS & External Antenna's for more complicated building structures. * Cost is roughly $240/mo per location. Now, if all 5 solutions are down… we have bigger issues than our business internet 😂 See link below to view our Data Sheet! https://lnkd.in/gg_EXHPU #lumen #technology #channelpartners
