Another great set of panel discussions at the Bisnow Seattle Life Sciences Conference. Some key takeaways: - Seattle and the PNW remains a top 5 Life Science region. - Startups continue to spin out of the local academic institutions at a high rate with the ability to do more with less (people, capital, space) thanks in large part to access to shared resources (spec lab suites, core facilities), infrastructure (AWS, Azure) and advanced technology (AI) at lower cost. - Higher Interest rates and changing economic conditions are resulting in decreased venture capital funding for startups, and difficulty accessing debt for developers. - Adaptability and flexibility are more important than ever in the built space to accommodate the rate of change in the scientific needs, especially with the adoption of more automated lab processes. Beyond just mobile lab benching, demountable partition solutions that allow labs to be reconfigured on short order are gaining in popularity, offer unique tax benefits, and support organizations' sustainability goals. Vantis is uniquely positioned to design and install flexible partition solutions in Life Sciences spaces, and we are excited to contribute to the growth of the sector in the PNW. #bisnow

UC Berkeley innovation was on full display at the inaugural Healthcare Conference Taipei hosted by Berkeley Public Health with partners at J.P. Morgan, Stanford, and the Regent Taipei Hotel. Thought leaders across UC Berkeley discussed their interdisciplinary efforts to combat Parkinson's Disease, revolutionize medicine through CRISPR technology, engage industry to improve clinical trials, and other health care tech innovations. Attendees included members of UC Berkeley's Innovative Genomics Institute, College of Letters & Science - Biological Sciences Division, College of Chemistry, The Forum for Collaborative Research, and more. Thank you to the many participating companies with Berkeley roots, whether you license Berkeley IP, count alumni or faculty among your leadership, have participated in UC Berkeley accelerator programs, or have received investment from Berkeley-affiliated venture capital funds: Berkeley SkyDeck, Bakar Labs, BEVC, Berkeley Frontier Fund, Rich Lyons, Laura Hassner, and Darren Cooke. Back at Slush 2023, Lech and I hinted at a big announcement. Today, we’re excited to share at least part of the news… I’m joining Lech Ignatowicz and Johan Paleovrachas as a Partner at Nordic Science Capital. Nordic Science Capital is on a mission to save lives by scaling profitable science. We do this by incubating breakthrough biotech ideas with our own capital—and we differ from traditional investors in at least three respects: 1️⃣ We prefer *ideas* over companies. We like investment targets that haven’t incorporated or realized the full commercial range of their research. We like to ask the right questions, co-file patents & actively steer scientists toward high probability paths to profit. 2️⃣ We sit in a lab. We incubate companies at our own wet lab space near Karolinska (home of The Nobel Prize committee for medicine - to all my American friends :). Our portfolio companies sit with us and benefit from this shared capital investment. 3️⃣ We focus on immigrants. We love Swedes—but so far, every scientist we’ve backed has been an immigrant to Sweden. Swedish angels provide fantastic support to local talent, and we want to replicate that support to people like us who moved here and want to contribute to this society. Six years, six companies, and seven patents in, we’re just getting started. ➡If you’re a scientist, student, or a fellow life science investor interested to learn more, come say hi to Johan & Lech this week at the Digital Health Cocktail Hour, an event we co-host with Karolinska Institutet, KI Science Park, Amazon Web Services (AWS), AstraZeneca, and HealthCap. 🍸 Register at the link in the comments.

Excited to share highlights from our two-day Longevity Workshop in collaboration with the Longevity Biotech Fellowship. Leading researchers, entrepreneurs, and funders met to discuss approaches to advance longevity science. The first day concentrated on bioengineering, artificial intelligence, tool development, and biostasis, while the second day stressed personalized healthcare for more specialized longevity solutions. The event encouraged collaboration among leading scientists and engineers striving to address critical industry concerns. The potential for breakthroughs in lifespan-extending technology is obvious, and with ongoing funding, the sector is set for major progress. https://lnkd.in/gscSCM7J

I want to talk to you about Viagra for a moment... Part of the Cambridge Future Tech mission is to turn unloved and overlooked deep-tech innovation into disruptive global ventures. What better example of a world-changing innovation that could have easily ended up on the cutting room floor than that of the little blue pill. Over twenty years ago, a medical laboratory stumbled upon an opportunity which happened to *ahem* present itself. Whilst lab testing a new drug designed to treat cardiovascular problems, some volunteers appeared curiously reluctant to report any changes – some flatly refused. When questioned, they coyly admitted to experiencing unexpected benefits in other parts of their anatomy. The research team refocused their goals and discovered that the test drug got hearts racing in a very different sense. Their adaptation to this market feedback would kick-start a global innovation success and would result in bringing in tens of billions in revenue. It was the perfect combination of scientific rigour with commercial common sense. This was the Viagra moment. But what will be the next? #deeptech #innovation
